U.S. driver's licence renewal
« on: June 18, 2006, 01:53:14 PM »
My driver's licence in the U.S. will expire next April. How would I go about renewing it from the U.K.? It's just a straightforward renewal--no written test needed--but can this be done from overseas? If I haven't managed to get my U.K. driving licence by then, would I lose my driving privileges at that time?
If I had an international drivers licence, would that tide me for the year even if my U.S. licence has expired? I have no intentions of letting my U.S. licence expire, but I can see where this might be complicated.

it really depends on your state- some states will let you renew by mail/online, some states require you to be there in person. There should be some info on your state's DMV/DPS website.

some states- like CA let you renew online (as long as you don't have certain offences on your record which make a retest necessary.  NJ doesn't let you renew online and infact, requires that you show NJ residency with credit card statements, bank statements, etc.

which state are you renewing?

i would ASSUME that you cannot legally drive in the UK on your US expired licenece.  also, you won't be able to use it in the US to get on planes, or in europe to rent a car, or in the UK to get car insurance.

i'd get it sorted.

The international license is only valid with a valid US license, I believe...every time we have rented a car with the international one we've had to show the US one as well.

Like everyone else said, it depends on your state.  I do know that an international drivers license really doesn't mean much and has to be accompanied by a valid (ie not expired) license.  Same for driving here...you wouldn't be able to.

Good luck.

You might run into a problem too in the sense that if you don't have a valid US address anymore.  They are likely not to renew it unless you have a valid address in that state.

And don't forget, your unexpired US license is only good in the UK for 12 months...

Airmom,

I am not sure what your situation is, but in my case I simply used my parents address as my US home address for my US drivers license, credit cards, bank statements, etc.  My folks then put together a package and send me my mail every month or so.  I've tried to go paperless wherever possible and this has helped reduce the mail.

I tried switching some of my US accounts to my UK address a few years back and it just seemed to cause more problems than it fixed, especially since I still have a big chunk of credit card debt in the US.  Once all of my US debts are clear, I will probably close most of my accounts and switch the remaining ones to my UK address.
