Absolutely shocking behaviour.  I have never seen anything so stupid in my life.  It was simply disgraceful.

You really do have to ask "what the h*ll was he thinking?"  And he was awarded man of the tourney..  they decided at half time before the incident.   It really is a shame that he was so stupid and what a horrible note on which to end a career.    He's right up there with Figo..

what did Figo do?  i tried to look him up but the only controversial think I saw was his transfer from barcelona to real or something for like 30 million pounds.  did he do something on the field that was distasteful as well?

Figo, headbutted a player on the head in the Netherlands game.  And he only got a yellow card.   No suspension either.  Maybe they should have used the video for that one too!

Disgusting behaviour!

I did hear grumblings that the reason Zidane did what he did was because he was being goaded and the Italian player called him a "terrorist"  (he's of algerian descent) I guess after all the sh*t he was putting up with throughout the game, that was the  straw that sent him over.  Doesn't excuse his behaviour but might explain it.

That's interesting...after it happened, I really really wondered what the guy had said to him to set him off so badly.  I figured it had to be something pretty offensive to get such a violent reaction from a normally classy man.  Stupid Italian.  Stupid Zidane :P.

Stupid, yes. But to many football fans he is the Great Zizou, the greatest player of his generation. Wonderful ability and still proved that he has it at 34. Take note Beck's, a great player is someone who produces in open play and doesn't rely on set pieces.

Le Bleus.

Also happy the Azzuri won, been a fan of Italian football since Football Italia used to be on CH4 all those years back.

r u all talking about something Figo did in this tourny?  if it was so malicious than why was he still playing.  FIFA has a lot of work to do IMO about the goings on of the world cup.  bad refs + dirty play + diving = a not so great tournament to me.

They need to do something about the PK system as well.  It was a shame to see the game end that way, because the better team did not win.  France outplayed Italy for 120 minutes, to lose that way just doesn't sit well with me.  Oh well, what else can they do.........except an extra 30 minutes of time, but with keepers who can't use thier hands :D ;D...that would be money

Figo was penalised by the referee at the time, with a yellow card...this means that he cannot be punished again after the game for the same offence.

As for the game last night...as much as I wanted France to win (lots, by the way), they did not outplay Italy for 120 minutes.  I considered it a very even match, both teams played the best i'd seen them all tournament.

There have been many experiements with other ways to end tournaments, and this discussion happens every year.  I didn't think golden or silver goals were fair, and while this may not be entirely fair either, I think it is the best way.

My boss was telling me today that apparently Zidane has been carded a few times before for doing similar things?  Is this true??  I thought he was the "gentleman".

Zizou was sent off in France '98 in a game against Saudi Arabia for allegedly stomping on Saudi captain.  I didn't see it so I have no idea whether it was deserved or not.

Ahhh this is why football is so interestin millions of people sit at home and watch the same pictures and yet see a different game :).  I thought Italy were by far the better side in the first half their 2 wingers dominated the game and only a cheaty dive gave France a lead.  Some strange decisions in the 2nd half by the Italian manager allowed France back into it and by midway through second half were looking the better side.  This continued into extra time till not to be outdone the French manager made some odd decisions and started taking off seasoned penalty takers (as well as Zidanes pathetic and stupid act) couldn't really see France winning when it went to penalties.  The golden goal looked like a very good way of solving the ties but was withdrawn.  I remember hearing about a contoversial plan of playing 15 minutes ET then every 5 minutes a player is removed from each side chosen by the opposing manager until there is a score, that might be fun :) and give the managers a bit more involvement.

that would be interesting, but then at some point your turning a beautiful game into some sort of WWE spectacle.  I guess they should just leave it as is.  All though I myself prefer the golden goal.

He is still playing because the reffing in the World Cup is dodgy.  And now they're using video and the 5th official who is watching the feeds.  That was the only way that Zidane's action was caught and why Rooney's stomp was dealt with waay after the fact.  It was clear that the ref didn't see what had happened because actually, the portuguese player fouled Rooney to begin with.   Figo's headbutt was seen by the ref, but the ref chose to overlook it.  He should have been red carded and banned from the game.  They need to take off those stupid head sets and start reffing the game for real, otherwise, admit they are using video and have it up front.
