What's with the weird baby names?
« on: January 15, 2004, 09:39:51 PM »
Just wondering, were all the brain cells sucked out of some new moms-to-be and given directly to baby? ;) Just kidding!

But really, have any of you viewed some of these baby-name websites lately? Absolutely humorous what some of these parents will name their kids.

Examples of one moms potential names I found on a baby forum site:

Boy names: Merric, Jakobe (jacob),Tayvise, Dacian, Zale, Espen, Bein (Ben), Mohon

Girl names: Maisie, Riela,  Aurem , Aricin,Tiaret, Teague
OMG!
This mom must be on crack. Hopefully her husband will stop her quick. ;D

What happened to normal, even clever names and without the extreme strange spellings/pronunciations?

I know every parent wants their child to be unique, but these people are'nt even considering the possible beatings the kid will have to endure at school everyday.
And they definately have'nt looked into the future to see that child as an adult.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule...like where you live or adopting a family name...but I believe some of the names above must have come from a prescription bottle!-ha
::)

Oh yes, some of them are definitely a bit off the wall.  Then again, I can't complain.  I wanted to name my son Llywelyn, but hubby nixed that.  He ended up with Niall Linden Pàdraig; not exactly a traditional English name, but at least it's a traditional Irish name.

Actually, Maisie is a pretty old name and even used by Sir Walter Scott in a poem.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Did you see the "Baby's got a Bad, Bad name" site I posted in Cool Stuff?  It was ages ago...the thread is called "a hysterical site" or something.  I would post the link here but I actually don't have it anymore, it's on my old computer.

On an equally cruel note, there were two girls back at high school with given names Holly Wreath and Candy Land. [smiley=confused.gif]

And I have an ex-b/f whose father wanted to name him Jesse James.

Mean mean parents!

I did a search for the site you mentioned listing in a thread a bit ago, SAF-

http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/

It had me cracking up! My husband and I were coming up with names for my best friend's little one (Eventually called Kyrie Elisabeth) and would have had a great time if we had read it at the time.

Thanks for mentioning it! Ow..my stomach still hurts from laughing hehe

I think unusual baby names are fine, the thing that weirds me out is when they are totally, completely made-up names that are hard to pronounce and/or spell. Then I feel bad for the kid.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

You have to think of the future.  I mean, really, would you use a solicitor whose name was Zippety?!  ::)

This is an absolutely true story. A few years ago I got talking to an Irish girl in a pub. She told me a story about her Canadian cousins who had a baby girl and called it Siobahn in honour of their Irish roots. However it wasn't until one of the Irish cousins visited them that the Canadian cousins discovered that the name was NOT pronouced SYO-BARN !!!!!!!!!

I don't know what is worse that or people who Anglisize/modernise Celtic name spellings eg SHAVAWN. Good grief. And as for the made up names, I'm with Marlespo it just isn't fair on the kid. Some very good friends of mine named their kid Keva ... doesn't sound too bad does it but where does it come from? It was a character in a sci-fi book.

Okay...welll I live in Georgia....so wierd names abound.

Worse one we have ever heard is from my best friend (whose a pediatrician) whose patient was.....ready.....

Shitavia. So we were wondering....could a nickname be little "shi**y?  I mean for pete's sake.

Then I had a parent named "Dorquetta"  To me -Dork-et-a to her it was -dor-queee-ta. Wait....and she was talking to me about her son who kept getting teased in school and called names.....the child's name?   LaNerda!    First of all....don't end a boys's name with an "A" like that and second don't put "la" which means "the" in front of any word that is an insult.  It's like naming your child TheSmelly one.  I felt so bad for that kid.  Not to mention he was very feminine and very nerdy....LORD!

I had a friend once with eight aunts and uncles and their names all rhymed.  Otis Merle, Lotus Pearl, Bodus Earl, etc....

I thought he was taking the piss until I asked his sister about it (she had not heard the original conversation) an she rattled off the same names.
