I have to say I'm not in love with pure maple syrup. I'll eat it. It's nice, but I'm equally happy with golden syrup or whatever.

I like more American-style pancakes (thicker) and DH likes the English thin ones. I have been having problems with my American ones being too heavy lately though. :P
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Same here, I will eat the pure maple, we've gotten it from Costco before, but I prefer the Lyles maple flavor syrup. There's a little shop near our house, has it ALL the time, where all the local supermarkets 'sometimes' carry it. Go figure.

for UK style flatpancakes, check this out (if anything the clip is amusing - think it was posted on here before)

For American pancakes, I always add a pinch of cream of tarter to the baking powder and I usually separate the egg whites and whisk them and then fold into the batter. And I always have good fluffy pancakes. There is nothing worse than stodgie pancakes!

Now I believe there is a difference between US baking powder and UK baking powder. I seemed to recall decades ago that I was told to add a pinch of cream of tarter to the baking powder. Which I still do.

As far as I know US baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, starch, and cream of tartar. Cream of tarter is not a listed ingredient in my baking powder here. Maybe someone stateside can verify the US ingredients?

Baking soda is Bicarbonate Soda here.

An 8-oz cup of UK self-raising flour contains 1-1/2 tsp of baking powder and 1/2 tsp of salt.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Thanks to you lot, we had pancakes for breakfast today! I don't care that much for plain pancakes--oatmeal pancakes are my favorite. We finished off the Grade B maple syrup from Trader Joe's that we'd brought over. It's darker and richer than Grade A, and it's super yummy. I think I need to hit the in-laws up for some more.

I don't understand the difficulties finding buttermilk. Our local Co-op and Tesco both carry it, and they're pathetic little stores. ???

You dont understand the difficulties?
Your shops have it, and ours dont!
That's the difficulty!  ;D
Well, it's not actually a difficulty for me, cos i've found a good substitute, so dont need to buy buttermilk again, really.

;D That's a first, believe me!

Maybe they use it in soda bread over here? I dunno.

I agree Lindy, 6:30 way to early for a Sunday morning!

I would love to make pancakes today as I haven't had any since my last visit home, but we don't have any maple syrup.   :\\\'(

Glad your pancakes came out good Elynor!

I'm having pancakes for breakfast!! I've never used buttermilk in mine - just plain milk - so it's not an issue. Real butter and real maple syrup. Mmmmmm...    ;D

It has to be real butter and real maple syrup. I can't stand that icky flavoured stuff. Yuk.
