Rooney Poll
« on: July 01, 2006, 08:33:54 PM »
I don't like him and in my opinion he single handedly cost England the match today.  Since the minute he stepped onto the pitch he has been a crybaby and a distraction.  his tantrums are detrimental to the team and his me, me, me, attitude is like a cancer.  In my opinion they should leave his prima donna a$$ off the team when it is next announce. (assuming they can do that)  What does everyone else think about this idea.

The title of your poll is should he be left off the next World Cup squad?
In 4 years time?
 ???

I hate the boy too, but a lot can happen in 4 years.
And, im not particularly bothered that they lost today, so dont really care what they do with him.

I think it's a wee bit early to make that judgement.  This very well could be Rooney's defining moment, as it was Beckham's in 1998.  He can either continue as is, or he'll step up and become a man.  His juvenile histrionics now have had  consequenses for an entire nation.  we'll see what he's made of, I think.

so how does being named to the team work?  is there a process or is it all up to the coach?  I'd be watching him playing for ManU this upcoming season.  See how he handles the pressure of being the country's most hated man......what a tosser.

I think the fact that you don't like him is evident by the title and your writing of this thread and this poll has more to do with your dislike than any facts about rooney or the game against portugal.  Did he stamp on the porugese guy on purpose to me it didnt look like it and the ref didn't seam to be overly bothered by that challenge and only became animated after rooneys slight shove of ronaldo.  Was the shove a mistake? yes was it worthy of a red card? it was harsh but we have seen people sent off for things like that before, but then we have seen figo head butt a player and only get a booking.  Well that apart was rooney to blame for England losing the game you might argue maybe if we had lost in normal playing time and not penalties, but when he got sent off Englands game actually improved and we actually looked more likely to score than we did before he got sent off, so you could also argue rooneys sending off helped England get through to penalties :o).

He makes mistakes he is hot headed he throws everything into his game he is all about heart and passion and unfortunately as is so often seen with this style of creative player he has a hot head, which will improve as he grows older (he is 20).  I hope true England fans will not turn on Rooney just because of yesterday and I do believe most true football and England fans have the intelligence to see that no matter how much it hurt going out of the world cup yesterday (and it does hurt) that to throw hatred around at players and people generally is the real cancer of the game and of life.

no, i clearly state that the poll has to do with peoples opinion of Rooney and whether or not they would rather he be off the team for the next world cup.  who cares what my opinion of him is, it doesn't matter if i thought he was the greatest guy in the world.  fact is, since the whole of england thinks he's the second coming of Pele, and everyone over here thinks that he was the savior when he came back from injury, and basically from the second he stepped onto the pitch he was a distraction to the team with tantrums and throwing off the teams chemisty.  The poll is my attempt to see if anybody else thinks that the team would be better off without him.

it's the world cup, don't be an idiot and shove another player while your standing in front of the ref.

and your right, the team played better WITHOUT him on the field, and he does make mistakes and he is hotheaded.  so thanks for agreeing with me.

What I don't understand is why I haven't heard a word blaming the goaltender. Everyone's talking about Rooney...Rooney wasn't the one who let those balls go past him, once leaping in completely the opposite direction. He didn't get near stopping any of those kicks, as opposed to Portugal's goaltender who actually did his job.

Rooney will NOT be left of the next WC team....that is a guarantee!!!!!!   He should not have been sent off yesterday, the ref was a total idiot!   >:(  Even FIFA are still wondering by Rooney was sent off.

Rooney has passion for the sport, which I admire, but it does get him in trouble.  One reason why had some tantrums during this WC is because Erickson was an idiot for play a 4-5-1 formation and he was getting frustrated that long balls were just being kicked to him and he is double teamed.  Last time I checked, Rooney is not the tallest of players.  Rooney would have excelled if a 4-4-2 was played as he likes to roam the midfield to pick up the ball from the midfielders.

C. Ronaldo better hope Real Madrid want him, because I can bet when he gets to training for Man Utd later this month, Rooney will make his presence felt, both on and off the training pitch.

Saving penalties is all about luck.  It was more the fault of Gerrard, Carragher and Lampard, who basically kicked the ball straight at Ricardo.  Any decent goaltender would have saved those kicks.

Saving penalties is all about luck.

Well, gee, why not just have some lucky fan come down to stand in goal for those penalty kicks?

If it's all about luck, then isn't any ball coming at the goal just about luck?

A skilled,  experienced, highly paid goaltender should be able to make it about more than just luck.  Nobody's saying it's possible to stop them all. But our GT didn't even manage to stop one out of five.

Well the next world cup is four years away and qualification is 2 years away what we have now is qualification for the European championship, so you are thinking he is fine for that but should sit out for the world cup after hmmm ok I think.  As for the rest England played poorly in the group games and that didn't change when he did or didn't play the players seemed happy to have him there so unsure what you mean about team chemistry.  Oh and thankyou for agreeing England played better without him when he got sent off, so he couldn't possibly of cost the England team the match yesterday as the team improved according to both of us so maybe you should change your vote :o) .

Sorry, absolutely disagree: Rooney did deserve to be sent off.  Stomping on someone's groin is not on.  And to be stupid enough to do it in front the ref, well, that says it all.  That wasn't some silly slip of the foot; it was a deliberate, albeit opportunistic, plant.

Will Rooney be in the next WC?  Provided he's still quality, don't see any reason why not.  Hopefully by then he will have matured.

Whether it is right or wrong the general rule of thumb with penalties is that they are easier to score than save so penalties become a no blame situation for goalkeepers and a time of glory if they win.  The penalty will always favour the shooter and not the goalie and they face all the penalties and not just shoot one so maybe that is fair and a good reason why people rarely blame the keeper in penalty situations.

Checking most media everyone is still very unsure what rooney got sent off for but i dont believe myself it was the (imo) accidental tread on the portugese player as he was trying to get back to his feet.  The referee really only looked animated when rooney pushed ronaldo and then pulled him aside to show him the card.  Incidently it is against the rules also to try to intimidate a referee into carding a player and so is diving which ronaldo managed many times throughout the match each a bookable offence.
