Immigration Lawyers
« on: July 03, 2006, 09:15:31 PM »
Hi everyone, Just wanted to ask if Immigration Lawyers actually help and how exactly do they help with applying for a visa? Would it be a waste of money for us or a good investment? There are special circumstances with our case (read about them here http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=26148.0 [nofollow] if you havent already). Thanks everyone.

I think in your case, mike, IIRC, you stand a good chance of still getting a fiance visa.

Others have done it in similar circumstances to yours.

Ask away!

I think in your situation you guys have a straight forward application for the most part at this point.  If you get turned down, which isn't nearly like the end of the world it is in the US, then getting someone to help you out might make sense.

On the other hand, you might want to PM garry and Victoria S.  I know Gary wanted to try and advocate for you guys.  They are going to give a lot better advice then the rest of us to be honest.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

Hi

Your application is going to be an utter pain, as no one will believe a word you say after all the breaches.

PM me if you want to chat...I won't start charging you just yet  ;)

Seriously though, it is likely that if you do the app properly it will work out, but it will certainly help to take some advice...either from a consultant or from those who have been through the process themselves.  There is certainly no need to spend loads of money.

I've just found out about the immigration advisory service, and will be seeking their help in addition to the advice we've been given and are recieving here, thanks to everyone who's replied and offered help, it's helping a lot.

The IAS are a charity who are funded by the government, from donations and work only on Legal Aid cases.  If you don't qualify for Legal AId they won't be able to help you.  And, the chances are, that if you fit the legal aid criteria, you won't meet the maintenence test.

Just as a note to forum members who are following this thread, Victoria initially learned the ropes working at the IAS and she's able to speak about them with a high degree of authority - that means she knows what she's talking about.

And to mike:  unless you've got lots of time to waste, try something more productive.  All you'll get from the IAS are brochures.

Okay it is a bit confusing, their site says they're independent from the government and that if you dont qualify for legal aid, you can pay fees, but if you're saying its a waste of time, i'll disregard them anyway.

They are independent from the government, but still part funded by them.

I assumed that you were going to them because they offer legal aid.  If you don't qualify for that, then their fees are the same as other immigration consultants, myself included.  I forgot they did fee paying work now - they didn't when i worked there.

You can find a full list of consultants on www.oisc.gov.uk
