Messed up now facing Quarantine is it really that bad???
« on: July 07, 2006, 06:41:20 PM »
Ok,

So yesterday was devastating we found our my Mini Schanauzer was not vaccinated when I expressly told the vet to do it, and I leave in Sept soooooooooooooooooooooooo  yeah we messed up!!! I was even told from a Heathrow animal reception gal that "Just because you are American doesn't meant that you don't have to follow the rules."  I dont' want to play the political BS game but I will to get my dog over, I kept going back to what I had to do to get him with me no matter what but she seemed focused on my nationality rather than the quest at hand. Ok anyway moving forward, I was devastated but with that behind us now my DF and I must look to the future and march on.  Basically the dog and I are a package deal get one get us both.  So we are now facing about 4 months of quarantine, has anyone else had to go through this?  How bad can it be???  I can say I will either be the kennel's best or worst customer.  I have a really tight bond with my dog so this is gonna be a really hard test for me but can anyone put me at ease and say their experience wasn't that bad???  Or make a funny joke just to make me laugh??  ANYTHING!

Is there any chance that your dog could be left with family back home until it's reached the required vaccination period, then shipped over?  Might be less traumatic than being stuck in quarantine.

Seriously consider this. Network like you have never networked before. I was in this situation a year ago. My dogs did quarantine/early release at a good kennel (which often got transfers from another kennel in the area). I am telling you visiting week in and week out takes a toll you cannot imagine. I am not trying to get you down if this is your only option - I am telling you the truth of my experience in order to say - do everything you can to find an alternative. Even if you pay a friend to keep your dog it will still be cheaper than quarantine. It got to where I couldn't go - my husband went every week.

Have you done the blood test yet? Please do double check me, but if memory serves the 6 months may start ticking from the date of the blood test, not the shot.

Worst case scenario, if you end up having to do it, you will survive and so will your pet. But everyone that I know that has gone through it would understandably not want to repeat the quarantine experience.
Stop waiting. Start doing.

I would never ever put my dog in quarantine.  I hope you can find someone to take him for 4 months, family or friends. :-\\\\

It's not 6 months from when the blood is drawn, it's 6 months from the receipt of a clear blood test which is typically a couple of weeks after you've had the blood drawn. Sorry. I agree with everyone else that if you can find a friend or family member to keep your dog until it's ready to be sent over, that's best. Also, I know on Continental the pet doesn't have to be accompanied, so you could hire a transport company to pick the pet up at your friend or family member's house and they'll take care of shipping him over and your friends or family member don't have to do any of the last minute details. Good luck.  :-\\\\

Kristen! I agree with everyone else above. I wouldn't leave him in quarentine...I couldn't imagine leaving my pet in the care of people I don't know for 4 months!! It could totally change his personality...and not for the better. He may feel abandoned. :-\\\\ Atleast if he stays home with your family he'll know them and he'll be okie and atleast you'll know he's alright and being fed.

Actually, it is 6 months from the date the blood was drawn.

Pets may not enter or re-enter the UK until 6 calendar months have passed from the date that a vet took the blood sample which gave a satisfactory test result. Your pet requires only one blood test and 6 months wait provided all subsequent rabies booster vaccinations are given by the required date.

Kristen, I have a friend whose two dogs are in quarantine now because of messed up dates. Don't do it if you can arrange any other temporary home for your pet. The dog very well may not survive quarantine! My cats are stateside now with friends because I knew that they wouldn't survive.

And, OMW, Where did you read that it's six months from the test results? Everything I've seen says six months from the blood draw. Please let me know where I can find the info you have.

Oh, thanks, Carrie. I thought it was blood draw.

Hey everyone,

I appreciate all your thoughts (Most scared the bejesus out of me and well only added to the tens of gallons of tears).

ok I had the blood drawn in Feb and got the "good" test results back.  The steps go

1.Microchip
2.VACCINATE
3. Blood Test

My vet missed VACCINATE because he knew his Titre test would come back ok (and it did) but the wonderfully pleasant (note the sarcasm) woman at Animal Reception after repeatly telling me how much Americans suck (Please don't turn this into a political thread I have my own issuses with her) told me there are 3 STEPS  MICROCHIP, VACCINATE, BLOOD TEST.  The woman yelled this at me and said, if I didn't follow those steps exactly there was nothing she could offer me (not that she wanted to try), then again made another comment about my nationality, to which I responded "Is it that I am American that angers you the most or the fact I am actually asking you to do your job?"   She didn't like that and promptly ended the phone call.  I told her so even though he tests ok, and he is fully upto date I have all the paperwork i the order of events that is tripping him up (Ok I know that is rule) but doesn't that seem sort of strange if he is already titred waaaaaaaaaaaaay above where he needs to be why isn't it ok?
Anyway I am willing to jump through any hoops to have him with me, but my options are running out fast and well I am really upset with my vet, the man who told he had done this 100 times before and had a "federal guy" he still messed this up, and he doesn't seem all the concerned or interested in putting things right. Am I being a brat???

I am trying desperatly to keep him out of quarantine, but thanks everyone I appreciate it all.

No you're not being a brat, your vet let you and the dog down, that's bad; however keep focussed on the bigger picture and that is getting the order right and getting your dog over with you (I know you're only "venting, but even so you need to stay on track).

Please heed the advice that everyone has given you and avoid quarantine at all costs. I will be happy to scare you to death if need be, but unless it is the total last resort you should change your flight or do something to delay if you cannot avoid it any other way.

I don't know what kind of personality your mini schauz has but in my experience (albeit mostly with standards & giants) they really do rely on the company of their owners and can be awfully stubborn and this could be incredibly unsettling and troubling for him (as well as you by the sounds of it.)

I wish you the best and please do carefully evaluate your options. It will be worth it in the end.

We left our kitty with my brother for two months.  Even though it was traumatic for her, it was much less traumatic than if she were in a kennel.  She still got lots of love and attention, even though it wasn't from us!  When it was over, it was like we had never been apart and that time was a distant memory.

Good luck Zeusy.  I know this must be frustrating for you.

Hey everyone,

So I have had a very serious talk with my mother and she has agreed under diress to take Dillinger until Feb!!!!  YIPPY NO QUARANTINE!

Now I just have to work out how she is gonna get him everywhere and everything done.

Wow if I make this much fuss over my dog wait till I have kids.

Yes this has all been very frustrating and I have been let down in a big way but you know everything happens for a reason.  The one thing that does keep bothering me is the attitude of the woman at animal reception but maybe she had an off day.

Thanks for the advice everyone I thank you all so much.

MY DH & I had a simillar problem with my vet as well. which resulted in my cats being left back home 6 monthes more than they shud have been in a kennel. none of my family cud take on my cats for that long of a time period. but fortunatly I found an awesome grooming / kennel for my cats back home in Indiana. the couple I found were extremly nice & helpful. thankfully they didnt charge us an outrageous fortune either. my cats werent stuck in there cages all day they had a room with a window to the outside. also a window to the inside of the grooming center as well. also I thought the room was quite big for 2 cats to roam around in & do whatever cats do. my cats got alot of attention for the kennel ownwers. I know I got extremly lucky finding the kennel I did. cause I didnt want to bring my cats over here an have to put them into Quarantine. I had heard to many horror storries & watch to many animal programs   about pets not surviving in Quarantine centers. I myself wasnt taking any chances with my precious cats to me they are my children. my cats have been with us since March 2005. to look at them now you wouldnt know what an ordeal they had been through to get them here with us.

If your titre test came back OK... that seems like the most important bit.

Can't your vet fix the paperwork?  Just, like... write the shot in?  I don't know about your paperwork, but ours was pretty informal.  I had to fill in most of it, as our vet couldn't read or write English.

He just stamped the forms.

If DEFRA already knows you and hates you... I'd fix the papers, then call and apologise for the misunderstanding.  Say the vet just forgot to write in the shot.

Fax new paperwork.  Done.

(Now, we did do everything in the correct order... microchip in, then shot done a minute later.  We had some trouble with the timing of the flea/tick treatment and worming.  They wanted the papers, then our flight was changed.)

There was a lot of white-out on our forms!
