having a UK spouse
« on: July 09, 2006, 07:52:42 PM »
I am not sure if this is the right place for this question or not but here it goes.  If my girlfriend and I get married while I am visiting her in the UK would I be able to stay in the UK for good?  Anyone out there that can answer this question or point me in the right direction.  Thanks

If I'm not mistaken...You can't just go over as a visitor and get married. You'd need to apply for a fiance visa and then after that you have 6 months to get married. She could come to the US as a visitor and you could get married and apply for a spousal visa but you can't go over there.  :-\\\\ Don't hold me to that I'm not 100% sure.

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.

you can't get married while visiting the UK.  In order to get married in the UK you, as a non-UK citizen or permanent resident, need to be in possession of  either 1) a fiance visa, 2) a certificate of approval (only possible to get if already in the UK on another visa longer than six months), OR 3) a marriage-visit visa (for people who just want to visit the UK to get married but plan to settle in another country.)  The registrar will not marry you if you don't have one of those three things.

If you want to get married to your girlfriend and stay in the UK, your best bet is coming over on a fiance visa (there are lots of threads on that here, or you can find out more at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk.)  Your other option is getting married in the US or another country and then you'd need a spousal visa in order to go back to the UK to live.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12
