Skiiiiiiiing holidays!

I want to have a family holiday this year with Mr Jimmie's family. His dad and brother have been talking about going skiing for ages and I think it's would be lots of fun. I've only been skiing once in Vermont, so finding a place in Europe is a bit intimidating, since there's so many beautiful places. There's going to be (hopefully, if I can convince everyone to come) 7 of us. I want somewhere cheap to mid-cheap. Not too fancy because we'll have to save up for Mexico for next November. But I would like a nice scene to gaze at... Does anyone have any suggestions?

A couple of the places we have skied while in Europe is Three Valleys in France (Val Thorens), Germany(Garmisch), and of all places, Malbun Leichtenstein. We booked for the low weeks - either mid-December or mid-January.  We were able to rent an apartment on the slopes in France for 4 of us with ski passes for 6 days for around $1000.  We brought our own food - mostly pasta and soup ingredients and then bought fresh bread every day for meals.  Most people wouldn't think of Liechtenstein as a ski resort.  But it was really a nice, small, family friendly area.  We booked a hotel with full board and would ski for a couple of hours in the morning and then ski down to the hotel for lunch and again in the afternoon until dinner.  In the evenings we would go sledding or ice skating.  All of these places are very reasonably priced if you can go during their low weeks and you don't have the crowds to deal with either.  Happy skiing!

we were in paris for work, booked a couchette bus (that folds to bunks at night) and did an overnight bus.  got to mirebell at 6am, into a hotel for breakfast and then on the slopes by 8am.  we skiied 2 days, took a night bus back on sunday to paris that got us there at 4:30am.  hung out a guar de norde cafe till 6am and took the eurostar back to be at our desks by 9:30am

grand total of bus, hotel and 2 day ski pass and rental.  About 175 each

it was basic shabby hotel, but you can't beat that price for skiing the french alps.  it was stunnign.

We had a family reunion weeklong ski holiday in Val Gardena, Italy. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL village and lots to do for non-skiers and kids too.  Its MUCH MUCH cheaper than France ski resorts, the rooms at the chalets are huge in comparision, food is good and cheap, and also unlike many of th French ski resorts that tend to cater to Brits (no offense), Val Gardena is very quiet and no drunken yobs barfing in the snow.  In fact, the entire time we were at Val Gardena, I only ran into a half-dozen Brits and Americans. Most of the guests were Italian, German and East Europeans but everyone in the resort speaks English.  And actually, the locals in Val Gardena don't speak Italian: they speak German or the local language, Ladin. (Ladin, NOT Latin).
