Visa Applications Hard or Easy
« on: July 16, 2006, 09:33:42 PM »
Many people write that they are worried about submitting their applications for fear of some problem or another.  For those who have completed the process please let everyone know just how it went.

I had no problems with my Visa... it was easier than dealing with getting my dog over here. ::)

Harder...because I had focused all my documentation on the wrong things. I had focused on the financial side. My husband has a steady job with a good income but no real saving. So I had my CV and emails from the recruiters I was working with. She never asked for or even looked at those. But she wanted more proof of our actual marriage: emails, phone records, pics and the like. We are totally electronic. Our phone is Vonage...no bills. We use Yahoo IM for all communication...and even though I archive...when you switch computers you lose those saved messages...and I had been through 3 or 4 computers in that time.  We only email each other if we're too mad to chat...and that isn't the kind of evidence I wanted to share. I'm the worst for developing pics...so I love our digital camera and Yahoo Photos. I really sweated it from 11 am till 2 pm when we went back. I was so afraid we were going to be denied. Luckily we weren't. But trust me...I'm planning ahead...already started a file for ILR and saving everything.

Much simpler than I thought!  Course I read and re-read everything a gazillion times and checked the list dozens of times to make sure I had everything I needed. I dotted all "i's" crossed all "t's" . I think I put more effort into it than was necessary. But it is always better to be safe than sorry!

After surviving the US visa process, the UK spousal visa was WAY easier!

about what I thought.  Had a pretty good idea what to expect and what to include from reading people's posts here.

I absolutely agree with you Gwen.  The US immigration process is a nightmare.  If the US would simplfy its immigration requirements and tax codes..... it would be a better place to consider moving to and working in. :o

Also entering the country.. 1000,000 times EASIER! For the first time I felt welcomed and wasn't afraid of the Immigration Agent!!

Yes...in that perspective even though I said harder than I anticipated, it was still a million times easier than what we went through with my husband. And the fact that it was harder was my fault. We had thrown everything together quickly once we decided to abandon the US process. I was fully prepared, just for the wrong questions. But in the end it was still completed in a single day.

PrincessJuls02 brings up a good point.  When you mail all of that in, you basically get what you expect, but when you show up, I think most people applying in the US would agree that it was easier then they thought.  I mean I brought a $hit load of stuff that they ECO just couldn't be bothered with as well as the whole processes was orderly and well conducted and QUICK.

I had to get my passport in person in New York and talk about a joke... I mean the that was the most convoluted thing in the whole world.

You can tell them what date you're planning on traveling and the visa will start on that date. If I had a bit more money I'd fly up to NY to submit my supporting documents in person but alas I don't, so am waiting. Word of warning about the date thing: make sure you don't book your ticket for earlier than you told them you were traveling...because then you'll have to change your flight as the visa will be valid from the original day you told them. For me I just told them around when I was flying, since I haven't booked my ticket yet. I think the visa will be valid up to 6 months after the date you told them. Not 100% sure though.

Much easier, but then neither of us ever even entertained a thought that it wouldn't be approved, etc -- LOL!  Hubby had a good job, very well settled here, etc -- having to get all those documents together was a little annoying at best, but heck - that's nothing compared to applying for ILR.

I've heard you can ask for a specific date on the fiance' visa (not sure how that works), but after the fact!  We originally were going to marry on 25 Sept -- just assuming my visa would be dated with the date that we gave as to when I would be entering the country.  Wrong!  Instead of 28 March (the date of my entering the country), it was dated immediately (20 Feb) & expired 19 Aug, so we had to change up our wedding plans a bit.  LOL!  It all worked out in the end though. :)

We did it through the mail.  It was all done & dusted within two weeks, plus we saved the cost of traveling to NYC & whatever extra the 'in person' fees were.
