On-line shopping, expiration dates
« on: July 17, 2006, 08:06:42 PM »
Apologies if this has been discussed before. I know that there is a thread somewhere on online supermarkets, but the Search function isn't working for me right now.

I have discovered Tesco online and I have been using them for the past several weeks. While I love the convenience, I am having a problem with food being delivered with early expiration dates. I have food delivered once a week, and purchase for the whole week; they keep sending me food that expires 0 to 2 days after delivery.  I end up throwing food away and having to buy more food during the week.

I was wondering if this is a problem particular to Tesco, and I should just switch to another supermarket, like Asda or Sainsbury's, or if I'll have the same problem with everyone.

Anyone know?

I can't speak for Tesco's, but we complained once about something to Sainsburys and they had people on the phone to us, sent us emails and worked quite hard to see that the problem was resolved.
We have had at least four online vouchers for five pounds off a shop from them- so they were quite responsive.  Could you try an email to Tesco's?

I use Tesco delivery and haven't had that problem. I did get a bag of dodgy looking apples and called them and they credited my card for them.

Have you put in your 'delivery notes' that you would like to have latest date possible? Maybe that would help.

Thanks, I just realised that you can click on each item and add a note.

DH used Tesco's delivery service before I moved here several times. he mentioned to me that whatever he ordered with a shelf life they always gave him the ones with the shortest shelf life left 99% of the time.

I have used Sainsbury --the only time I received something with a short expiration date it was marked and the driver checked up delivery if I wanted to accept it. Appearantly they didnt have a later one available.

That's been my Tesco experience as well.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Alex ordered from Tesco's once and they substituted a bottle of Diet Pepsi for me with... regular Pepsi.  Don't think there was any issue with expiration dates though.

Thanks everyone.

I called Tesco and they said to write "Longest Life Possible" next to each item. So I will try that for next time, as they seem to have a better selection since Asda or Sainsbury's. But I'm just giving them one more chance, as I can't afford to keep throwing away food.

Update: Well I won't be ordering ferom Tesco anymore.

This week, I ordered 5 prepared salads to have for lunch at work.  I noted for all of them that they should not expire for at least 4 days.,

I received one that expires on Sunday (the day of delivery) and 4 that expire on Monday.

When I called Tesco to say that they hadn't followed my instructions and that my household could not eat that much food in two days, and I would have to throw food away, I was told that those would have been the latest dates available.  When I asked if they could just not give me anything if all they had were items that expired early, so I wouldn't have to pay for food tha I was just going to throw away, I was told that "the shoppers aren't trained to do that."

They are refuding me the cost of two of the salads, but that doesn't compensate me for having to buy more food during the week.

It's a shame, as they have a good selection of food, and I've had no problems with their delivery in terms of the promptness and helpfulness of the drivers, but I just can't afford to do business with them. I wonder how many other customers they've lost because of this.

I'm also tired of eating food because I  have to eat it before it goes bad, not because I'm in the mood to eat it.

I havent really had much of a problem with Tesco and expiry dates unless it was bakery bread rolls which usually would expire the day of delivery.
ADSA is worse though! Not only have i received out of date produce but I have received IN date meat and chicken which was discoloured as it had been sitting out all day.  [smiley=puke.gif]

I must be a total weirdo...I don't worry about expiration dates at all.  If something is expired, I'll still eat it...unless it's moldy or stinky or something.   :P

Ah, my ex is the SAME WAY!  He has an iron stomach and could tolerate anything, even meat that had been sitting out.  After one BAD bout of food poisoning, I'm fastidious about tossing things and not eating anything that's out of date.

I don't, either.  I have had food poisoning several times, however, always from restaurants where I couldn't access the food before it was cooked.  I also contracted Hep A from a dodgy street vendor selling meat pies in Venezuela - my bad I know!

I use the 'whiff' test myself and have never had a problem.
