Getting Started!!!!
« on: July 25, 2006, 02:24:50 PM »
Hello,

I need some guidance on the correct protocol on moving out of the US into the UK. I currently live in the US and I hate it here. I don't like the culture and especially sports world. I am a huge soccer fan and here no one cares about the sport. I am currently 24 and I missed most of the last world cup  due to employers not caring about the sport. I could not get off work or go on vacation, however, there are other reasons as well but I would greatly appreciate any response I am looking to have a job in IT work or computers in about a year. Also I need to get financially setup to b/c I heard US dollars are not worth much to the UK.. Thank You...

Here are the options:

1- Find job with UK employer who is willing to sponsor you for a work permit

2- Marry a British citizen

3- Become a student at a UK university and get a student visa

4- See if you qualify under Highly Skilled Migrant Worker program (unlikely as you said you're in IT)

Good luck

You can also marry an EEA national (who wants to move to the UK with you).  Moving to the UK just because you want to is not really possible visa-wise.

Yes, the GBP is worth more than the USD.  You can check the conversion rate here:  http://www.xe.com/ucc/.

Have you ever visited?  If not, I'd highly suggest it before even contemplating a move.

Have a look at this thread, as well:  http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=25243.0

Welcome,

Have you ever been to the UK?  :-\\\\ if not just like stuzmrs said I suggest you go for a visit before packing up your life and heading to another country.  Like the others said you can't just up and move you have to have a reason:

- Job
- Marrying a British Citizen
- Student visa

There are others but those are the ones I can come up with lol

Another question...basically what I got from your post was you want to move to the UK mainly because the US doesn't support football? I don't think missing work for ANY sport would be very well looked upon here lol. On the other hand I don't know about England but I know that I doubt my SO's boss would have appreciated him staying home to watch footy lol it's just not responsible.

Good luck with your plans

Ummm this isn't a site to look for relationships and I wouldn't advise you to seek out a relationship just to move over...immigration doesn't like that lol.

You're welcome.
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

If you're into soccer and people don't care where you are, why not try moving around the US? I know my family has said certain areas are much more into soccer than others...

People in Europe don't just get time off for the world cup... and not everyone likes football. And getting a job means proving that you can do a job no one in the EU can do - which is pretty difficult. (So don't get your hopes up.)

Quality of life is definitley relative and I'd not even really think about visiting til you've been here at least once. The same for Germany, etc. It's an expensive and stressful procedure to go through.

Why no link for the myspace page?  There is nothing better than a good myspace trainwreck.

Damn, we should of told him to just hop on a plane and work illegally in the UK, but no, we had to go ahead and accurately answer his questions.  We should be ashamed.

He is going to have a bit of problem getting into Germany, but hopefully he isn't reading this board anymore.

Oh, by the way for those interested, Chad Buie is our friend here, his MySpace page is http://blog.myspace.com/buiesworld, he lives in Jacksonville, FL.  His blog is filled with misspellings and obscene language.  He makes between $45,000 and $60,000 a year and has a Bachelors Degree in Economics.

Can I just say that I have an irrational* hatred for people who make three or four times what I do and can't be bothered to use proper spelling and punctuation?  I feel like it's a slap in the face, considering I spent six years getting three degrees (in the humanities, alas) and am still making peanuts.  ::)

*like i said, it's irrational.  i know that.  it still bugs the crap out of me.
