No NHS card???
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:18:05 PM »
I my first appointment at the gp surgery almost a month ago.  I saw the nurse, filled out some questionaires, etc.  I still haven't gotten my card.  My husband who went with me that day to change surgeries from his previous one got his card shortly after.  Is this normal?  Is it just taking long because it is the first time?  I'm confused.

Really?  I got one - it's a paper card but it's got my number on it and my surgery.  I got it about a year ago though, maybe it's been changed now.  I guess the important part is just having the number though.

My new surgery certainly still issues cards.  I registered Thursday before last and received my card last Monday.  I would just assume that your DH got his card sooner because he was already in the system...maybe?  I have heard of some people having a wait of 3 months for a card, though, so there's still a chance yours is on its way.  If you don't have it in a few weeks, I would suggest calling to surgery to see if they've submitted the paperwork.

I have one somewhere but to be honest I can't find it. As long as  you are in the PC, they can look you up.This has been my experience.

Your NHS number is on your card -- you won't know it until you get the card.

I had (and am still having) a huge problem registering with the NHS.  I'm apparently just on the border of two health authorities.  So I got "lost" in the system between the two.  The GP handles patients from both authorities.  When I went to register, back in December, they told me everything would be fine, and I would have a card (or at least a number) within a couple of months.  Here I am, still waiting.  I had a supervisor look in to it, she put me in the system, I was queued to be allocated a number, and I did indeed receive a letter from the NHS a few days ago.  Only the letter didn't give me my number.  It said that they didn't  have enough info to assign me a number.  It asked the same exact questions that I had answered on forms at my GP's office.  Ridiculous.

I hope it doesn't take two more months!  I suppose that I won't have a problem going to my doctor since I am a patient there now, but what if I need the card/number for anything else?  ...sigh...

I can't think of a single instance where I've needed my number, either.  ;)

I registered with a GP over a year ago and no card was ever issued.  Didn't know you needed one....(or in most cases don't need one.)

I needed my number to get my EHIC card.  I haven't needed it for any other reason though!

I registered about 2 months ago and after 5 weeks they sent me a paper card with my number on it. Haven't needed it yet, but you never know.
