How many boxes did you send?
« on: August 01, 2006, 01:29:52 PM »
I know some people have sent actual containers through moving companies, but for those who just send boxes over when you moved, how many did you send?

Including books, I'm sending around 7-8. Ranging in weight from 10 lbs to 30+  :o The USPS is going to love me!  :P

I just sent 4 yesterday, they were the large boxes from U-haul and in total mine weighed 200 lbs.  I sent those through UpakWeShip for $375.

Yes! I have to say I'm leaving a good bit here in the US with my family. A part of me wishes I did UPackWeShip but it just seemed easier to go through the USPS for around the same amount  ::)

5 - but then I had two work related trips right before my final move in which I brought over 3 suitcase full of stuff each time and dumped them at the BF's parents house.  I did leave a lot of stuff in my parents basement, but then again, I threw A LOT of stuff out too.  I looked at it as a good time to get rid of stuff from lives past.  :)

I talked with a few shipping companies and didn't get a decent quote. Most of the port-to-port quotes were around what I paid out to USPS but I still would have had to pay the cost of getting it from KC to Chicago or Houston. I got lucky with a lot of my boxes arriving in 4-7 days even though I paid surface rates.

I am shipping 14 boxes of books each weighing 35-40 lbs.  Plus I'm shipping about 300 lbs of stuff in about 10 boxes.  We're probably going with UPS as it seems that we can get Worldwide Expidited (3-5 days) for about $3.24 a pound.  I need to stop into the UPS Store to just verify the online quotes I've been getting.

I'm shipping this way for the same reasons as tanis.

10 boxes for $650 with USPS
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Princess, don't forget that if you're shipping books, send them book rate using an "M Bag". It's much cheaper.

I sent 4 huge M bags....and only one box (Christmas ornaments). The rest my daughter and I packed into our four alloted 70 lb. suitcases. I also left some things for my family to bring over when they came for the wedding. Overall when it came down to it I realized how few material things mattered to me. There isn't anything I wish I had brought. There are two pieces of furniture that I have left at my sister's house. These were my daughter's grandmother's (my ex-MIL) and I wanted her to have the option to have them when she grows up.

Between 20-30 of varying sizes though more of the bigger size which were sent over on the 'slow boat' using USPS.

Still getting them 'trickling' through. There's about 14 in the 'holding area', AKA, the garage! :D

I sent 6 boxes of books via MBags ($144) and the last two just got here today.  Took less than six weeks.

My son and I had 7 suitcases, 3 over 50 lbs so we had to pay excess weight fee and the excess fee for 3 extra suitcases.

Shipped over 30 boxes of stuff via UPakWeShip.  Took 4 1/2 weeks to get to the port, then they had to clear customs and be trucked to Manchester.  We just picked those up on Wednesday.  It was $450 for the shipping (port to port) and then an extra £150 for customs and clearance and all that mess.

But when you have a household of stuff and a child, you have a lot of stuff to bring.  It's like Christmas in August with all the unpacking going on.

I've come to the conclusion that I will be paying excess baggage fees and probably paying for another suitcase! But I'm sending my two big boxes via airmail today - ugh going to have to pay the USPS around $200 Grrr  :P
