We are actually doing a container so I wouldn't be able to tell you about shipping boxes, but I do know about the excess baggage though. Most airlines have changed their baggage allowance to only 50 pounds per suitcase now, and I know that Virgin Atlantic won't even let you pay for extra weight in a suitcase, they would make you put the extra stuff into another case. You can pay for extra baggage though, and with Virgin Atlantic (up to 50lbs) would be $100 dollars per case. Just FYI.

I'm not taking anything except my 2 suitcases...partly because I don't know if I'm going to be in the UK for more than a year, and partly because I don't own that much stuff!  I gave away/got rid of a lot of it when I moved out of my apartment last week, and I'm finding that I'm not too terribly attached to most of the rest of it.  I do miss not bringing most of my books though (I have an insanely huge collection), but if it ends up that I'm staying in the UK longer I'd probably ship those over using M-Bags.

I checked the Virgin Atlantic website (who I'm flying with) and it says:
Quote
Bookings made since the 1st April 2006 are subject to new free baggage allowances. Economy passengers travelling on flights to/from the USA, Caribbean, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and Nigeria wishing to check in baggage weighing between 23kg and 32kg are subject to an excess charge of GBP20 / USD35 per piece. Additional pieces over your free allowance are charged at the normal rates listed below.

But would a flight from the US to the UK (Orlando to London) be classed as " to/from the US"  ??? or "to the UK"

It counts...they have a whole different set of rules for baggage in general from/to the US, not just on excess weight charges.  I flew BA from the US to Manchester, changing planes in London....despite the fact that I had more luggage than would normally be allowed on the London-Manchester leg, they didn't charge me anything because I was originally coming from the US, and flights coming from or going to the US (along with those other countries you listed) are subject to a different (more generous) baggage allowance/policy than the rest of the world.

You should make sure when you are on the internal flight you mention that you are a "transfer passenger from an international itinerary" and they "normally" allow you the excess baggage.

Most excess baggage allowances are "discretionary".  If you have 10 bag, you are going to get nailed.  If you have 1 excess baggage, you can try and sweet talk your way out of it.  The best thing to do is not argue about it and just grin and bear it.
