Freezing chicken
« on: August 10, 2006, 11:37:53 AM »
Hey all.... I'm not used to freezing chicken cause I usually eat it before the date.  But if we stick it in the freezer, how long is it good for?  1 month?  2 months?

Thanks!  ;D

This site says you can freeze a whole chicken for up to a year.  Not sure i'd let one stay in my freezer that long but looks like if it's wrapped up well it'd be ok.

Chicken is very forgiving of freezing.  Make sure it's completely airtight to avoid freezer burn, and it'll do fine for several months.

Thanks.  Its always an unopened package of skinless/boneless chicken breasts.

I usually buy packages of 4 chicken breasts and when I get home I pop two breasts in a sealable (ziplock type) sandwhich bag, easy when cooking for two.  I've never had a problem w/ freezer burn.  Lile Tristessa (and Hormel) said it'll last a while.  I've had a bag that got "lost" in the freezer for over 3 months, still tasted delish.  I remember eyeing it a bit suspiciously when I found it but decided to try cooking it anyway.

Judging from my mother's freezer, I would say a few years.  :-X

lindyloo- i used to do this.  until i found the tesco's chicken breasts that are already individually wrapped.  about 8 or so breasts are in a big baggie.  quite nice.

i had a friend for whom cutting chicken would give her nightmares.  so she's get like 5 packs of breasts and chop them up into stirps or diced or whatever, and they she'd freeze those.  only one night of nightmares for her.

That's me!  Dissecting chicken was never a big deal for me before I was pregnant.  I developed a violent aversion to all things chicken during my pregnancy, and while I can (finally) cook it and eat it again, I get physically ill if I take a knife to it.  Weird, huh?
