Curry Packs
« on: August 12, 2006, 08:41:24 PM »
I tried something new recently, and it was so fab, i've got to share it with you guys!  :D

Curries... good stuff, yeah?!
But how many times have you tried to make a curry at home and it tastes nothing like the restaurant ones?  I HATE the useless bottled/jarred curry sauces in the shops, and normally make my own spice blends, but it can be a pain in the erse.... and sometimes it still doesnt taste quite right, no matter how much care you take.

I cant remember which cooking programme had a little feature about this place... i think it might have been Rick Stein?

http://www.spicebox.co.uk/about01.php

I bought a couple of her curry packs, and made one today... and it is totally amazing!!   All the spices and oil and garlic and onions and everything are in the pack... you just add your meat/veg, and whatever type of liquid your particular type of curry recommends.... cook it up and eat!

I made a saag gosht... spinach lamb curry, and all i added to the existing spice pack was water, raw lamb, baby spinach, and a chopped up tomato.   The curry is incredible... the only thing i would change is to add more chilli, but we are HotHeads!  ;)   I've put it in the fridge for the flavours to meld a bit more, and we will eat it tomorrow.

But if any of you have ever struggled to re-create restaurant curries at home... i completely recommend checking out this site!

Those look awesome! Do the packs need to be refrigerated?

no... i dont think so.
it says on them that they will keep for 6 months in the freezer, but nothing about keeping them refrigerated after purchase.

I'm going to try them, I've bookmarked the page.  I'd love to be able to make a decent tasting curry at home.

Thank you for posting this...I've gone ahead and placed an order.   My home made currys are not the best and the nearest curry house seems to think a gallon of oil makes food taste better!   :-X

They look really good - what a great idea!  I can't believe no one's done this before...they look totally authentic!

honestly... the curry i made was so good.  absolutely perfect (apart from needing more heat) and it was so, so easy.   I know it's a bit of a cheat, but i was sick of making curries that just weren't as good as restaurant ones, and i think i've found the answer here!

My friend went to an Indian cookery course, taught by an Indian chef, and passed on some of the recipes to me... the curry i made with the pack was even better than these cookery course ones, and didnt have the faff of boiling onions in an ENTIRE LITRE of oil for hours!  ;D

My order arrived yesterday and my asian co-worker was impressed enough to take the included flyer home for her own purchasing info. She pointed out to me that even though they should serve 4-6, that if I mixed the packs extremely well, there was no reason I could not halve them and freeze the rest for later, thereby making it a more manageable size for a singleton. I didn't really know what to expect, so here's a pic for your reference.

The onions are already fried, with whole spices and paste sealed in a bag. You just add the pack to water and then add the appropriate extras (meat, veg). Even an apathetic cook like me can't screw this up. Thanks so much QG!! :)

Just wanted to add... although the packs say they serve 4-6, in reality, it made 2 large servings... so with more normal-sized servings, it would make 3.

Courtney, dont split the packs... just make the whole lot and freeze the completed curries!  :)
