Frozen pie pastry?
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:25:59 AM »
I went to ASDA last night (it's close to my house) to buy some ingredients for an apple pie I wanted to make today.  I got everything but the frozen pie pastry.  They had frozon shortbread pastry and filo dough, but not regular pie pastry.  My husband says he's never seen it (then again, he had also never seen low cal cooking spray).  I refuse to believe that everyone in this country makes their pie pastry from scratch, especially considerint the amount of pie that is eaten here.  Anyone know if Sainsbury's, Tesco or M&S has them?

I have tried and tried to find this and I found something somewhat acceptable in Waitrose.  However, it cost like £7!!  Come on!!  I settled for a powdered crust mix from Sainsbury's - it turned out ok for my uses, but not exactly my first choice.   :-\\\\  I would love if someone had some better suggestions!

i've seen shortcrust pastry here in the UK.  but never pre-formed intoa pie plate.  only in a big lumpy square or rolled.  i think it's called short pastry here-

making pie crust from scratch takes all of 5 minutes.  def worth it for the pure butter taste.

I've seen what looks like the equivalent of graham cracker crusts (the kind in the little foil tins) in Asda here.  Not sure if they're any good, though.  They're in the freezer section with the ice cream toppings and custard powders, etc.

I've seen the mix powder and pre-shrunk block in tesco I think but  I've not seen already formed in a pie pan either.

They make Pillsbury pie dough here...well the UK version... ;)

it's called Jus Roll.  http://www.jusrol.co.uk/

You can buy it in a block or in rolled up flat sheets.

You do actually have to put it in a tin yourself though...

Available at most Supermarkets of your choice.

It's called shortcrust pastry.

do they have pie dough now? because the pilsbury ones I've seen were either make croissants or cookie dough..not the pie.

I'm going to be looking out for that now thanks! ;D

Sorry Alicia.. I meant Pillsbury like...though I swear I saw the dough boy on some a while back...

I can't say it 100% .... the Jus-Rol works lovely though!

oo I'll have a peek for those because what I've seen are the filo pastry ones because sometimes I'm just not in the mood for making pie crust from scratch :P

i've only ever used the saxby brand puff pastry & short crust pastry.  has anyone tried both the Jus & the Saxby brand to compare the two?

FYI, on a food programme I was watching the other day they said when buying pastry, buy the stuff that is made with butter, not vegetable oil.

It takes more than 5 minutes to rub all that butter into the flour and I hate that feeling of flour on my hands.
