Mopeds
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:37:15 PM »
Ok, I searched the site and found some info but not specific info so I thought I'd try to clarify.

A1 license is for 75cc to 125cc (or similar hp from electric motor) scooters/motorbikes

A license is for 125cc (or equivilent and up)

BUT, what about under 75cc... more importantly under 50cc, which most mopeds are (usually 49.5cc).  You do not need a license in most of the states to ride these on the street nor do they require a plate (at least where I am from).  You can't ride them on bike trails and they do have to be registered ($40).

So what's the deal?  Can someone give me a straight answer?  Do you need a license/MOT/tax/plate/etc. for a moped (less than 50cc's)?  If you do need any of these, which ones and why/how?  And are their any restrictions to them (no limited access roads, etc.)?  What about tricars that are under 75cc?

Thanks in advance

I think it's a little confusing what you're actually asking.  If you're asking if Mopeds have to be licenced and insured in the UK, then the answer is yes.

Here's the link to the DVLA

The link appears to answer it to me.  The answer is yes for tax, license, etc, and 50CC and under is considered a moped.

that link was a 404 error for me but I did eventually find the chart on the site.

So it's not an A1 or an A, it's a moped, which is a seperate classification.  This is different than otherwise indicated in threads on this site.

Mopeds are 50cc's or under and limited to 30mph and cannot be driven on highways/motorways.  They do require a CBT and L or D plates.  No passengers, obviously, all logical.  However, it is still not clear if they one is allowed to ride a moped on a U.S. car license if the state in question does not issue licenses for moped use.

My best advice is to contact the DVLA personally.
