Customs Fees???
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:19:06 PM »
Did I miss something (feel free to say if I did or not).  I paid Upakweship the money I owed them for my move ($375) and I got another email from the port, asking me fill out the same paper work I filled out for Upak along with a bill for 152 pounds, for customs fees.  This is for 4 BOXES!!  Almost $700 for 4 boxes???  Is this correct or am I being taken for a ride??  I didn't even get home delivery, Roy is picking my stuff up from the warehouse.  I am perplexed, did anyone have the same problem??

Hummm...I used the same company and paid one fee, when I dropped them off at the shipping dock.  Did you mark all the contents "used household items"?

PS  Call Alison and ask what they are charging you for!

Yeah marked them all household used goods, nothing new, nothing even that was liquid.  Do you think it different because I am picking my things up and not having them delivered.

Jenn thanks so much I knew you used them and I was hoping you would respond.  Did you pay your money to Upak themselves or something to the acutal shipping place you dropped yours off at.  PM me if you are more comfortable.

Did you fill out a C 3 Form?

Are they fees or duty?  There are two big differences there...  Duty would be your charges of importing the goods.  If this is a move of household and you filled out the C 3 form properly, you should have no duty (assuming this move is related to a marriage).

If they had to/decided to inspect the contents, then I think the fee is like £60 and would not be paid by the shipping company in most cases, since this would be an incidental fee.  My understanding from my mover/shipper is that A LOT of stuff is getting pulled and gone through these days going into the UK because of the security issues.

I would try and get more information about specifically what you are being charged for.

I paid all $840somethingish directly to UPak, mailed a check to Alison.  All I did when I dropped the boxes off was give them the packing list.  I had 24 boxes and a very detailed list of the contents.

Hop on the phone to Alison, she should figure it out for you.  After all, its why we are paying them!

Yeah I filled out my C3 form (kept copies of everything thank God) and this is what is on the bill

Container Unpacking £47
Document Fee         £30
Customs Clearence   £75
For a grand total of £152

Document fee???  The customs clearence I completly understand, but an unpacking fee and a document fee??  I paid all of these here.

Alison has not called or emailed me back.....needless to say I am a bit frustrated.

Yeah, I would say the only one that might not have been covered would have been the Custom's Clearance...

Silly people...

Well it turns out I do have to pay all the fees, because they opened my packages (but I ironically I was copied on an email I think I was supposed to be left out of that actually said the packages weren't there yet, but they were opened by the same person that said they weren't there yet...strange isn't it??)

Whatever I just want my stuff and will us the Post office for future endeavours.

Just an update, I am really getting frustrated and no one seems to be getting back to me....Roy was told we have to pay the custom fees, fine right we are ready to pay, we are told to call and talk to this guy named Andy he will take our payment then give us a code that we use to pick up the boxes, fine great EXCEPT Andy has gone MIA!  We can't find him and the Felixstowe dock said my boxes have been sitting in Tillbury checked and ready for pick-up since Monday, Andy told us that the boxes still weren't at the warehouse (and that was yesterday Thursday), he told Roy that he needs to pay him to come pick them up, and to call back and give him the payment information, Roy called Andy had left, and he won't be back until Tuesday, and the letter Andy has for Roy has to be posted they will not accept a faxed or emailed copy of the letter with the "special code" on it.  Andy also told Roy that Wednesday he could come pick the boxes up, this was waay before the secret code and letter issue ever came up, Roy took a day off of work and hired a larger car specifically for Wednesday.  I am so angry and Alison at Upak isn't calling me back and it seems I was swindled out of a whole load of cash!!!  What am I to do?
