Have you seen that TV program where the dietitian examines someone's - err - droppings?  I overheard an edition recently where she was saying "at least there's whole lumps of food in here, so that hasn't been added to your weight". No absorbtion = no getting fat?

I've never heard of such a program. No absorption probably means not getting fat, but also that you're probably not absorbing important nutrients. Unless the person has some type of intestinal problem preventing them from absorbing nutrients properly, I would think they are just eating a lot of fiber that doesn't get digested.

This reminds me of the "fake fat" that was put on the market to use in foods labeled fat-free. (called Olean I think.)  Basically, it tasted like fat, but it was a molecule so big that it was impossible to digest. So people who ate it didn't gain weight; however some ended up in the ER with life-threatening intestinal trouble. That's what happens when you try to eat something that's impossible to digest. I'm not sure if it's still on the market in the US. Might be.

Your anus will be leaking, but you will be thin.

Actually, I think obesity has more to do with lack of exercise than what you eat.  When I was a kid, we drank soda (not the diet kind), ate junk food, and so on.  But we used to go outside and play jumprope, handball, stickball, whatever type of physical activity. So whatever calories we got from the crap food were burned off pretty quickly.  Not like today's kids whose extracurricular activity consists of sitting in front of a computer playing vidoe games.

Beware this 'You are what you eat' gal!  She advises regular colonics.  The colon is a self-cleansing organ - the person does NOT need a colonic to cleanse the body and they can be quiet dangerous.  That made me dubious of her straightaway, and there's a bit of controversy surrounding her 'qualifications'.

I like the way she advertises herself as coming from the Scottish Highlands, when in reality she comes from a council scheme in Perth.

The big reason that Americans are getting heavier and heavier is tri-fold:
1)  We're not exercising or moving as much as we used to.
2)  We're eating more processed, higher fat/sugar foods than we used to.
3)  Our portion size is out of control...when I was young I used to drink full sugar soda...but never more than 8 oz.  Now kids are drinking 32 oz sodas and many of them on a regular basis.

To maintain or lose weight one needs to exercise more, eat less processed foods and control portion size.  That's why the French tend to be thinner....they may eat higher fat foods but they tend to walk more, eat smaller portions and eat better tasting foods!  Americans do the opposite...

Have you been reading that new book, called something like 'Why French Women Aren't Fat' or something like that? I saw it in the bookstore yesterday. :)

Is this the book you mean?

I've read this book, and the second book, More Chic & Slim.  What this woman says makes sense.  Eat a balanced diet, eat at meals and not in between meals, eat smaller portions, and eat natural foods, not processed crap.

I'm off to have my Sunday dinner now.   :D
I'm sorry.  I'm just not cool.

They also tend to chainsmoke a lot! I recently read some interviews with a bunch of French women -- talking about what they ate & drank during the course of a typical day. They definitely ate less than we do in the UK or US, but they smoked SO much! All of 'em! I just came back from Paris yesterday, and I can attest to the fact that there is a lot of smoking over there. I guess they satisfy their oral fixations with ciggies rather than Cadbury bars. Me? I'd rather be a non-smoking fatty.

I think smoking definitely curbs the appetite, though there are plenty of obese people that smoke.  Overall there is a higher quality of the food and a slowness about eating it that helps in France and the Med.  I grew up eating whole milk straight from the cow pretty much, strawberries with nata (whipped heavy cream) and tons of other things like pasta, fresh meats and lots of legumes and vegetables.  I never ever gained any weight eating that way.  We ate three balanced meals with maybe a few snacks along the way.  My mom had even sent me for the summer to Spain to try to make me gain weight as I was thin.  I think the diet added to the more active lifestyle of the people is what makes the difference.  It was not until I took my second trip to the USA and got introduced to McDonald's that I began to gain weight.  I then also became more sedentary. Since that time I have struggled with my weight.  I really do buy into the idea that the USA is "supersized" due to what is in our food.  The problem is the phenomena is spreading to most Western cultures and childhood obesity is on the rise.  I think the only benefit is that Europe had us to help show them the implications of not trying to stop the trend before it gets out of hand.

I lived in France for two years.  Whilst many adults do smoke, I found on the whole French women are smaller framed than Brits or Americans.  I myself am Hispanic and have a slight frame and am only 5ft., 3 in.  The BIG thing I noticed about food there were the portion sizes and the speed at which food is eaten - much smaller and much slower.  It just seemed they didn't have the huge appetites.  It really worked for me there b/c I've just never been a very big eater.  Even here, my husband and I just don't eat huge amounts, just don't ever feel the need to 'pig out'.  I'm beginning to think it might be a genetic thing - being small-framed is, wonder if appetite is as well?  :-\\\\
I walked a lot more in France than I did in the US, about as much as I do here.
