I've been having some amazing food experiences in my travels lately.

Stout and Cadbury's in Ireland... the cows must be happier in Ireland because the chocolate tasted so much better... or perhaps that was the beer effect.  ;)

Edinburgh...I would have never guessed some of the best food I've had in the UK would be in Scotland!!

Haggis, neeps and tatties and ale to wash it down in some local... lucky me, last plate! Definitely beat the fisha and chips and frozen pizza they were serving up once the special was done.

Mexican food so good I thought I was home.

A juicy burger and the thickest milkshake I've had that wasn't straight from the tub! Not to mention A&W on the menu and the cute little cup of M&Ms that came with the bill.

and on the side trip to Glasgow the combination KFC and A&W Restaurant. Okay... so a rootbeer float in a papercup isn't quite the same as a frosty glass mug but the thought definitely was worth it! There is one of these in suburban Cairo too!!

I am off to Paris and the Baltics next!

Anyone else have any good food and travel stories??

Great thread idea!

Some of the best food I have ever tasted was in Turkey! So fresh and well prepared. The best yogurt ever was in a tiny mom and pop place in Turkish Cyprus. I'd love to go back one day......

My favourite meal abroad was at a restaurant whose name i cant recall in Trarbach (Traben-Trarbach) in Germany.  Pig cheeks... the most tender and succulent pork i've ever tasted; on a pile of mashed potato which had apples, roasted onion and bacon mixed in... with a little jug of melted bacon fat to pour over it.   Also, on the table was a loaf of bread, with a bowl of solidified bacon fat with chunks of bacon in it, which was to be spread onto the bread like butter.

I know... fat, fat, and more fat... but it will stick in my mind forever as one of my favourite ever meals!

ha ha not at all! I just have my moments when I startle myself and realize how average England can be.  ;)

Even my colleagues awed when I brought back fudge (not the chocolate stuff) and Edinburgh Rock and Iron-Bru.

Scotland is lovely.

Scotland is lovely.

It is quite...we had lovely food in Edinburgh!

I guess most of my food stories would be from India though...one of the nicest was a midnight trip to a kulfi (a type of ice cream) stand on Marine Drive in Bombay.  It is a well-known stand where people come from all points to taste the lovely kulfi at all hours.  My cousin and his wife took us there and we were quite happy to be taken.  :)

We rented a cottage last summer in a small town in Devon.  The local chinese joint (take out only) had the best banana fritters either of us had ever had before and have had since.  They were SO good.  The fact that the place was 1 minute walk from us and we could get them piping hot helped a lot I guess.  Now we joke about driving to Buckfastleigh one weekend just for the banana fritters.  The name of the place is "Cook & Fry"

My bf and I were in Poland in May, and his mom's bigos was amazing!  It's a very traditional Polish dish with different kinds of meat (lamb, bacon, chicken, pork), sauerkraut, and various seasonings.  Really good!

One of the best ice creams for me though is the hazelnut gelato at a small coffee place in leicester square in london.  i first had in 2002 when i was in london and insisted on going back there for the ice cream last december.  the temperature was barely above freezing, but the ice cream still so good!

geetak, I was in India back in January.  My program includes field work, and we were in Kerala for 8 days.  I know I can find butter and garlic nan here also, but I remember eating so many of those when we were there!

The food in Crete was pretty incredible too... nothing fancy, but just so, so, so fresh and lovely.

Big plates of the reddest, tastiest sliced tomatoes, with olive oil and salt drizzled over, bowls of olives and feta cheese, fresh sardines that were swimming in the sea 3 hours before they hit the plate.   :)

The best pasta I ever had was in Venice at a small local place off the beaten path. It was Spaghetti a Lemone. A really simple dish made with fresh lemon juice, a bit of cream, salt and pepper and, as the waiter called it, "oil of olive." It was so good, we went back 3 times for it even though we were staying on Lido, about 25 minutes away!

I'd have to agree, the food is better in Scotland! I can't remember having a bad, or even average, meal up there.  I had the best home made veggie sausages in a cafe in Glasgow, served with apple mash, it was so tasty. Wish I could remember the name of the cafe! Great curries in Glasgow and Edinburgh too.

Other memorable food while travelling: eating koshary in Egypt (sounds horrible, tastes wonderful mixture of macaroni, rice, lentils, tomatoes, lemon juice, topped with crispy onions); pili pili fish in Kenya; fantastic seafood in New Zealand (incl. the wonderful Polynesian fish marinated in lemon and coconut cream); awesome mezze in Dubai and Khartoum;

Masala Dosa, dal, potato chaat, and my absolute favourite..poori with chilli and tomato chutney...from a little outside restaurant in Bangalore.  No wonder I put on 4 stone and went up 3 dress sizes when I was in India!!!

omg....where to start?

prawn thai curries sitting in a shack over the water in thailand

pork and speitzel in budapest that was to die for...so rich and creamy and the speitzel was so buttery.  MMMM

Italy, don't get me STARTED on italy!!!  I hated milan but even the food at the event we put on there at the hotel principe di savioa was OFF THE HOOK. never has a 'buffet' tasted so good.

paris-a typical french salad with eggs, beans, chicken, new potatoes and french dressing in a little cafe.
