how many of you have a lot of stuff in two countries?
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:06:09 PM »
I've been here for six years as a student, and now, since this spring, as a spouse. I've still got lots of stuff in my parents' house, that I'm working up the nerve to ship over - things from my grandmother, books, furniture, etc. I'm not thinking of taking everything, but it's 'home' stuff, I'd like to have... (I say nerve both b/c it's a huge undertaking, but also b/c it means the suggestion to my mum that we'll be here permanantly.) I've been taking things over in suitcases, but putting off any serious 'move'. How many of you have 'moved'? I'm feeling a serious nesting instinct...

I've been fully moved out of my parent's house for years now.  However, I still have a few boxes in a closet and now my wedding dress is there.  It's just easier to keep it there since we'll move every 3 years.  It's not stuff I use.  DH, however, has a ton of crap still at his parent's, but it's all boxed up.  We actually have a lot of stuff in multiple countries.  His job has some of his stuff (furniture and such) stored in Maryland and also Germany.  They've got my furniture stored somewhere in DC.  And we've got a full houseload of stuff here in London.  When he retires and we settle somewhere and all of our stuff gets delivered to us it's going to be like Xmas...seeing things after so many years.  We'll need a HUGE house too to keep it all.  I'm all for throwing it away  ;D

My mom has been bringing crap over with her for the past 17 years that I abandoned at their house.  I'm hoping that there isn't too much left now.

Heck I had two sets of everything for a while.  I am finally abandoning all US stuff I am not moving.  Either it moved, or it got tossed or given away to friends/family.  The last thing I want to do is pay for a storage space or dumpy a family member with stuff...  Goodbye junk!  It is quite liberating!

Think about it, if you don't need it, use it or whatever for over a year, you don't really need it.

I have tons of stuff still at my mom's house.  I came over here just intending to stay for a year.  5 1/2 years later I don't know when, if ever, I will get it.  I have a few things I really want, the rest will be given away the next time I go back.

Every time I come home to the parents, I feel bad, because I just bring more stuff for them to store!  But when it's back and forth to a foreign country, it's rather hard to take all your sentimental stuff with you.  I either just need to move over permanently or get rid of everything not in my backpack! :P

We've got things everywhere. My inlaws in Suffolk have half an attic of stuff for us that they bring to us bit my bit when they fly, and we bring back to the US as well (we've repatriated). The one big thing we have in the UK is a massive solid wood bookcase that will cost about 184 billion trillion dollars to ship - so it sits, waiting peacefully, until we can save 184 billion trillion dollars, which takes a while. :D
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

DH has tons of stuff in his dad's loft, and my room at my parents still apparently looks like it blew up from the last time I was there over a year ago.  My mother desparately asks me when I talk to her if there is anything that I need/want when I go over in December!  I think it may be bringing more back with me!   ???

I have a storage shed full of stuff in CA at my dear friend's house that I am planning on cleaning out when I go back next April. I am planning a huge yard sale now that I know what I *really* want to bring over and what is easily replaceable.

Totally. I've got childhood stuff at my parent's and recent stuff at my sister's house.

She just visited me this week and looked at me warily when I asked her to bring back my large suitcase... empty I told her!!! It's a good thing, I said, so I can carry more of my stuff over in November. She laughed. She knows I am a nomad and will always have something stored at her place!

We've got boxes in both our parents' basements in Canada.  Truly, the only things I would like to have are my photo albums, the box of the kids' mementos from when they were babies and DH's record collection (yes, hundreds of LPs!)  The rest, eventually, we'll get rid of completely.  After moving so much, I've pretty much lost my attachment to STUFF.  The furniture we've left behind has eventually made its way into other people's homes.  The furniture that I love, is with me.

I've got some stuff at my parents house in FL and a table and chairs that my cousin is borrowing at their house in MA.  Other than that all my stuff is here.  Alex still has quite a lot of stuff at his parents house.  His mum is itching to reorganise the house now that my SIL has moved out so I think the bookshelf and the Star Trek stuff will be coming over to our house any week now.

(Raises hand)  We have a ton of stuff in storage and some at my mom's house back home.  We also have a lot of stuff here because we weren't sure if the move would be permenant or not.
