'Vegetarian' Tom Yum paste?
« on: August 29, 2006, 09:40:04 PM »
Just bought some tom yum paste, and noticed there were two types available.

Regular and vegetarian.  The vegetarian was 20 pence more expensive.

I had no idea that the regular contained any animal products.. and here are the ingredients:  soybean oil, lemon grass, water, salt, chilli, garlic, lime juice, sugar, kaffir lime, shallot, MSG, citric acid, galangal.

Which one of those items is the 'soylent green' in tom yum paste?

Regular tom yum paste usually contains fish/shrimp extract.

Yeah I am always a bit leery of those pastes.  I am dying for some penang-type paste but they usually contain fish products of some sort.   :(

If you are a vegetarian for ethical reasons, and you eat something not knowing that it contains animal products, is it wrong?
The only meaning anything has is the meaning you give to it.       ~Author Unknown

No, it's not wrong. You couldn't help it if you didn't know. You'll remember to check more carefully in the future. Don't sweat it.

I agree - it's not wrong.  If you didn't know, you didn't willingly choose to eat it.  But now for instance, me eating gummy fish yesterday which quite clearly contain gelatin.... :-\\\\

I'm not really into gummy sweets but my husband is and I've noticed a lot of the American ones like Dots don't contain gelatin.
