It depends - there are so many different packages now. We pay £17.99 per month with Virgin for high speed broadband.

Talk Talk has a package for £21.99 a month which gives you free phone calls including international calls to the USA and free broadband. It also includes the line rental that you would have to pay to BT which is about £12 a month.

We pay £14.99 with Tiscali. Lots of places are now offering phone and broadband plans combined. And Sky, one of the major cable providers is doing TV, phone, and broadband I think.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

If you're really on a tight budget, some ISPs offer quite cheap dial-up packages if you're prepared to use the service only at off-peak times.  For example, Tiscali has a "DayTime Plus" package which provides unlimited access 8 a.m. through 6 p.m. for £7.99 per month.

Hi there,

As always, like for like and yes, Internet access is substantially more expensive than the US deals.

One place I can definitley recommend to look at is www.adslguide.org.uk - theres a whole lot of specific forums on there sounds like you'll need the which residential broadband forum and have a look around at the comparison tools.

Hope this helps!

Cheers! Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

On the bright side though, even U.K. ISP tariffs are considerably cheaper than it was 20 years ago to access CompuServe and similar services, and at bit rates which were almost unthinkable back then.   :)

I have a combined package through NTL, whereby I get Internet, phone, and cable for £30 a month -- tel: 0800 052 0665.
I leave for work at 7:10 each morning, and get home at 6:00 each evening.  Wish I could stay home all day and do nothing but sit around on UKY!  What a life!  And I have no Internet access in my classroom, so I can't just stop teaching and surf UKY.  Can you believe it??  Horrid, my job!

It varies.

I have AOL Broadband, which I get for free (I work for them) but I have to pay for a phone line provided by BT. The upgrade of the line didn't cost me anything - but it is a bit irritating to pay for a phone line that I only use for the internet.

Another option is Telewest.  If the place you are in does not already have it - you will have to have the cable installed. This is, of course, based on where you live and if you can get Telewest.  You don't have to have a BT phone line to get Telewest - but you do need their (Telewest) cable.

It's very confusing. The best thing to do is budget about £30 a month until you know for sure where you are going to be and what you can get.

I just got AOL broadband this month.  There were no hookup fees, just had to wait 2 weeks for my BT landline to be enabled.  So I pay £14.99 for broadband, plus £12.00 for the landline.  When I signed up, the special included one free month and a wireless router.

Ditto to KK's post, except line rental is £11, not £12 :P.

I recommend AOL.  Well, I've only been online for one day with them, but I got the modem within the 14 day window the website quotes, so I'm a happy customer!

Just FYI - AOL is for sale... ;)  Although this shouldn't effect anyone's service....
