Getting across London with one large suitcase
« on: September 06, 2006, 08:15:40 PM »
OK, Here is the good part: so I managed to pack all my belongings into one rather large suitcase and two small bags and I made it here to London, yay!

Now for the bad part: I am only staying in temporary accommodation until I can find a flat/flatshare -- how do I move my large suitcase?  Can I take it on the tube?  Will everyone on the tube be really annoyed?  Is my only real option a taxi?  I already spent waaaaay to much on a cab from the airport and don't want to do that again.  ???  Any suggestions extremely appreciated!

Thank you,
Holly

P.S. I love this board everyone is so helpful!

As long as you can haul it, taking it on the tube is not an issue. There are always people on the tube with luggage. Good luck :)

You might want to avoid rush hour though! a minicab might not be too dear and a lot easier.

I've done it!! Just compare how many transfers and factor in steps and how popular the tube is and then decide if a taxi would save a few grey hairs!!! It's not pleasant, but doable.

People annoyed on the underground... well I don't think anyone can avoid that.

If you aren't totally familiar, each station has a wheelchair/stroller/luggage gate near the stiles, so you can get in and out with large pieces of luggage.  The worst case is that you have to wait forever for a lift in some stations.

The cheapest is to take Picadilly line, but Heathrow Express is much easier to navigate with luggage.  As long as you don't mind moving slowly, I wouldn't worry about the others.

Rush hour on the tube with my 70lb suitcase was something I hope to never repeat.  I was helped up the steps at different times by some v. gracious Englishmen.

I second what Olive Oyl and Britwife have said.  If it's not too dear and might save a back strain a taxi is the way to go!

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I can't decide. The cab does sound like the easiest way -- however I paid £70 from the airport.  Is this normal? To pay that amount again would be a bit too dear I'm afraid.  :-\\\\

Thank you again!

I assume that was for a black cab? a local minicab firm will be a LOT cheaper - have a look in the phone book & ring around a few local firms for quotes.

It also depends where you are going - from your temporary accomodation to your permanent place.  It depends on how far away it is and what time of day you go, obviously.

I agree a cab is easiest if you can afford it, but it CAN be done on the tube if you need to.  Many tube stations DO NOT have lifts or elevators, so you have to weigh that up too.

When we moved from our temporary place to our rented flat, we actually did it in a few trips on public transit to make it easier.  It was a lot less stress and the cost was just the day travel card, so it was cheaper than a taxi.  We're sorta cheap though!   ;D

black cab from the airports is so un necessary (but i did it when i was a tourist! :X)

the tube would be fine, especially if the lines had escalators!

or a mini cab from a reputable place is ok too, and much cheaper

and it really depends on how far you're going.  if you're going from ealing to say, canary wharf then that is ££!
