List of UK Jobs in Demand
« on: September 11, 2006, 03:25:54 AM »
Does anyone know where there is a list of jobs in demand within the UK?

I understand Social Work is one of these, but how do you know?  Where is this list?   ???

Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

The list of jobs on the official shortage list is on www.workingintheuk.gov.uk - it is best to go directly to the government site than an agency site, as it changes quite often.

However, this does not mean that you will only be able to get a work permit for those positions.

Why not?

If there is such a shortage of social workers, why wouldn't I be able to find a work visa?  Isn't this pretty common?

Ah, and thanks for the official list! :)

EDIT:  Sorry, I think I missed the key word?

Yeah.  :)  She meant, just because a job isn't on the list doesn't mean you won't be able to get a work visa for it.

And thanks so much for the links.  :D

I noticed there are a lot of medical professions on the list and thought, "that figures.  Everyone said when I started college that if you go into medicine there's always going to be jobs available."

And of course I had to be the crazy one who gets a degree in Studio Art so it's hard to find jobs even in the US.

Hmm, maybe I'll consider teaching art...

Just curious--what is your major--Painting, Sculpture, etc?  I have a degree in Painting, but ended up working retail / food service another thing that is certainly not on the list!

It's not on the shortage list, but field archaeologists.  We have a MAJOR nationwide shortage.  Anyone interested should check www.bajr.org for job listings.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

What about being an entrepreneur and starting your own business. There are lots of options and lots of help online. Here's one for women in business: www.iamawahm.com  in the UK. Just an idea. Good luck!

The £200,000 needed for the visa might be an issue though...
