But if you are in Germany, don't leave your fork and knife crossed on your plate like an X unless you had an awful meal.  It's a way to express your unhappiness with either bad food or service!  :o

I always learned you put your utensils side-by-side, tines up at the 4:20 position.  You do this so the person clearing your plate, can indescretly put their thumb over the handles of the utensils so said utensils won't slide off the plate when they carry them away - because they will generally pick up the plate at the 3:15 position.  This is assuming, they will not be stacking the plates (horror of horrors!)
