Newark to JFK Airport Transfer
« on: September 12, 2006, 07:32:58 PM »
Has anyone done this? How much of a pain in the butt was it? I'm in the process of booking my Thanksgiving trip to St. Louis on American Airlines and the return portion is STL-EWR, JFK-LHR with a 4:25 layover. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yikes, that is a bit of a pain as they are on opposite sides of the NYC. I wouldn't do it... just think if your flight was late or there was traffic or simply the hassle of collecting your luggage and travelling across the city plus to the 1-2 hours advance check in.

You can take the train but I believe you'd have to switch trains at penn station at least. I think there's another switch but I can't remember what it is.

Its 'expensive' if you go by taxi!

I paid 75 bux for a Newark to Flushing, Queens trip one time - I wasnt expecting it to be so much and was a bit miffed ad a bit more irritated by the driver who just keppppt on wanting to talk to me all the way as I got in on a late flight and had a 1.5 hour immigration processing time for some weird reason...

JFK is of course further so can only imagine itd be around the 100 doller mark!

Plus point was that it was a big 'town car' so was nice and comfy!

Cheers ! Dennis! West London UK!

Thanks for the replies. After having another knock down, drag out fight with AA and the AAdvantage Award system (available flights for my dates have been popping on and off this week), I found a much better route via Gatwick with a layover in Dallas/Fort Worth. As much as I love visiting the NYC metro area, that was definitely not the way I wanted to do it.

I've done this transfer!  If you don't have a LOT of time, you're risking missing your flight.  That's what happened to me  >:(

I am glad you did too!

I've had to change terminals in Newark before and that alone was a nightmare. I've also made the haul to JFK from Manhattan and know if anything unexpected happened in the journey I was SOL!!

Just out of curiousity and don't mean to slightly change the topic, but we are switching plans in Newark in November.  Can I ask what made it so difficult? I would just like to be prepared before I get there and have a general idea of what to expect.  I see our plane will land but no mention of where though it does say our connecting flight is in terminal A. Why are they so keen on pointing this out?  We have about a 3 hour layover. Do you think that is enough. DH tends to panic in situations in where he seems pushed for time. And if it is going to be a hassle, any suggestions?

where are you flying to?  uk to newark to ??? on which airlines?

i've transferred in newark and i didn't find it too too confusing- but the whole immigration, collect your luggage, go through customs, re-check baggage can be confusing.

also- time of day & time of year can greatly impact an airport experience- newark is relatively easy to navgate but they were doing construction last time i pass through (june 06) and so that may add to the confusion.

3 hours should be fine...I did it in 1-1/2 hours and THAT was a struggle!

Basically getting your stuff, going through customs and then checking in again is the pain!

We are flying Continental from the UK to chicago with a change over in Newark.  I thought I was picking up that some found Newark a bit confusing for transferring.  I am a bit confused why you would have to recheck luggage though.  Shouldn't it be checked all the way to your final destination? I did have to recheck luggage once in the states when I was flying domestically but it really wasn't a big deal.  You just collected your baggage, then walked through the set of doors where there were conveyor belts for specific airlines and you put in on the appropiate one.  Is it like that?

Depends...on who you fly with!  I'd ask your airline.
