Found: pickles
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:53:51 PM »
Like some of the rest of you, I have been missing dill pickles a lot and searching everywhere for them.  I decided to check in the little Polish shop that just opened in town, thinking that might be a good bet.

Well, they had some, and they are a much better substitute I think than anything you can get in Sainsbury's. Now they're not exactly like American pickles. I think they might be slightly more fermented than most of the ones in America are, and have the tiniest little hint of something like a sauerkraut taste. I don't find that this detracts and it's not noticeable at all when sliced on a sandwich.

They have a very good dill flavour. They are much like the sort of whole kosher dill pickles you'd get in a deli and are nice and sour, and slightly on the soft side, but still have a crunch to them. If you like the really crispy fresh packed garlicy ones that aren't fermented, then these aren't remotely similar.

If you live in a place with a Polish population, look for a shop selling Polish foods. It is worth a try. A fairly large jar cost a mere 99 p, which is a nice bonus.

Thanks for the info. Here in Wales, we have a lot of polish living here now. Some of the nicest people I have to say. I'll try to find out if there are any new polish shops opening soon. I miss Heinz dill pickles  :\\\'(.

What is the brand name? I live in an area with lots of polish shops, so I can look for them.

Yes which Polish ones, we have tried several Polish brands and none of them are right, they always have sugar. We got some of the Sainsbury's ones this week and we've added our own garlic & dill, just waiting a few days to see if the flavour improves.

I still stick to French Cornichons when I want a pickle fix.  The minute I see sugar as an ingredient in dill I  just put the vat down.  I do enjoy Polish pickles though.. I have a shop at the top of my road I need to check out. :-)

Courtney and Britwife,

The brand is Polish Specialities. These are the only pickled cucumbers they had in the shop I bought them in, and they're definitely not sweet! The jar says "Cucumbers in Brine" and then below it what I imagine is the same thing in Polish, but that's just guessing. There is a very obvious head of dill seeds in the jar along with a garlic clove.

Ingredients are cucumbers in brine, salt, water, spices. No sugar in these.

I just went to the Polish shop and they didn't have the Polish Specialties brand but I got some others, not sure what exactly is in them as the writing is all in Polish so we'll let you know when we've done the taste test ...

The Polish shops have excellent pickled herring, too!

I did find some great pickles at sainsburys, but I haven't seen them recently.   They were in the regular section.. no sugar.

I found some cucumber spears at Sainsbury's too that weren't sweet, but didn't think they tasted as good as what I was really after (they had no dill in them) and were in the wrong sort of vinegar. Very good substitute in salads and things though. What I liked especially about the Polish ones is the dill. I have been making my own dill pickles too with some pickling cucumbers that I grew in the garden, but haven't had enough cucumbers at once to do a whole batch and put aside a few jars.

I think that the only things I really miss about the US are a few little food items you can't find easily here, but now that I've managed to get a family member to send me a Global Priority flat rate mailer packed full of chili powder and red pepper flakes and I have a jar of pickles in the fridge I'm a lot happier. :)

Are they a specific type of chili flake or chili powder because both are available here.  Let me know I will try and source it for you.

My lastest pepper of choice for cooking is Piment d'Espelette from SW France Basque region.  Try it once and you will never find a normal pepper flake exciting.

About the Sainsbury's pickles... they were very crunchy and EXTREMELY sour.  Good in small doses.  Yeah, I don't think they had any dill.

The vinegar seemed to be more concentrated than in NA.  (??)

Hey, VNP, where do you buy your piment d'espelettes?  Always interested in new chilis!
