After a fall
« on: September 15, 2006, 06:11:49 PM »
I was at the nursery's after school yesterday, and tripped over a kid's foot, went totally flying, splat. You know that moment when you fall where you can either recover and right yourself, or just end up eating the carpet? I had no chance, I went diving. It hurt when I fell, I landed on my knee and left side and smashed my arm and left chest (ouch), but, man, today it hurts so much worse. I feel bruised and stiff all up and down the left side, but very little bruising is showing. This post is kind of a moan, cause it really aches now, so I might have it in the wrong section. But I am also wondering, is it going to get worse? What do you do after a fall? Just grin and bear it and hope it goes away? Man, it's sore! On the plus side, it was that bad of a fall that no matter how ridiculous it must have looked, no one, not even the kids, laughed. If that can be a positive!

Aw sorry about that Stella Maria.

I had a bad fall like that a couple of months ago. I turned and didn't lift my foot quite high enough and stumbled on a cobblestone. Worse yet it was at a bus stop on a main road. I biffed it hard. Both hands were scraped up and bleeding (I fell superman style) and my knee was raw. I showed up at my home visit shaken and bleeding and loads of people saw and no one offered to help me recover my bags that went flying. I think my pride hurt worse than my body at that point but I do know the achy feeling you are taking about.

I'd advise you to take it easy and try to stretch out the limbs that hurt to avoid them stiffening up. You can take some drugs too to take away a little of the soreness. Keep an eye on the coloring and make sure it looks like it is healing and not getting worse.  See someone if it gets worse.

Heal better soon!

I had a pretty bad fall like that 6 weeks ago in a car park. Luckily the people who saw did help me up and one woman got me some bottle water when she saw how shook up I was. I injured both palms, my left wrist, my right forearm and elbow and twisted my left ankle. (Lucky for me it all happened a week before I was scheduled to start work :) - can't be a programmer if your hands don't work.) I went to A&E because I couldn't straighten my right arm at all and luckily nothing was broken/fractured. I was told to take some OTC pain medication and stretch out the limbs like Olive Oyl said. I've never had visable bruises before but the ones on my palms showed up fairly quickly and the one on my wrist took a couple of days to show. I'm pretty much back to normal although I still have some lingering pain in my left palm and wrist and right elbow from certain movements. Anyway, ditto on all the advice from Olive Oyl and go see your GP if you think it's not getting any better. Hope you feel better soon.

I feel your pain!  Last week I was walking through campus and tripped over thin air in front of about 300 college students (not one of whom offered to help... miserable brats).  Aside from embarrassed, I felt okay.  Until the next morning when my right leg hurt like h*** and I could barely walk.  I must've twisted it badly when I tripped, I guess.  Anyway, it took about three or four days, but I'm completely fine now.  Just a huge bruise on my calf to remind me of my clumsiness.

If you don't have any bruising, you probably just did a number on the muscles on your side.  Load up on the pain meds and see how it feels in a couple days.  Hopefully you'll be back to your ole' self in no time!

I agree with the stretching and try to drink as much water as possible. Your body is doing repair work right now and the water will help flush out the waste.

Ouch.. sorry to hear about your fall. I don't have any words of wisdom to add, think everyone has given some good advice. But if you take FGs advice about the booze, stay seated so you don't injure yourself further!  ;) ;D Take care and I hope you are better soon!

Thanks, everybody! I just can't believe how incredibly sore I am! I feel like I've run a marathon, but withou the satisfaction. I've got the hot water heating up and will be taking a bath later this afternoon. Thanks for all the advice.

Get some Epson Salt to put in your baths, while you're healing.

And take some arnica, or get an arnica rub...it will help prevent swelling and bruising.

Well, thankfully, the soreness is going away, not as bad as it was, just wee twinges now. The bruising has shown up, my knee is quite a sight. The bath helped. Thanks again for the tips.
