MY DH & I got married in the States for the simple reason my family is twice as big as his family by a long shot. Another reason we got married in the States was since I was moving to England I thought it wud be nice to get married in my Hometown. not to mention it was cheaper to get married in the States. MY 4TH Sister who Im closest to & My Best Friend did alot of the planning for our wedding via the internet with me,thank goodness for webcams! My DH's family didnt come over though my MIL & FIL are afraid to fly. but when we got back to England after the wedding we had a family function. that his mum arranged for just DH's immediate family where only around 8 people were invited, like I said he has a small family. we didnt do a party for his friends cause DH doesnt like big crowds or being the center of attention, which was perfectly ok with me. this NOV will be our 2nd anniversary yeah. Goodluck with your Wedding!

Thanks again for all of your stories! We definitely have a venue and a date (Friday, April 20th!). I think we have managed to make everyone happy. I took videos of the two sites I looked at in Charleston and mailed them to my fiance. Luckily, we were both in complete agreement. His parents, sister and brother-in-law saw the video as well and are very excited.

The reality of it is really starting to hit me. I just can't wait to get out of this limbo period and start living my life with Gavin. That's what it's all about anyways!
Wed at last on April 20th!

Our story is that we're having the legal wedding here just the two of us and a justice of the peace :) That way its personal and alot easier when it comes to obtaining a visa to work in the UK. For the actual larger, church wedding, we're having the ceremony in Scotland. My family is alot larger than his, but I'm a romantic so the thought of having a reception in a castle trumps everything. lol Since less people can jump across the pond for the ceremony, it means a smaller price for a nicer party. My mom is also holding a bridal shower over here right before the wedding so that family who cant come over to scotland will still be able to celebrate! Very Complicated... but hopefully it will work out fine.

I live just 90 miles north of Charleston, SC (I hope this is the Charleston you are talking of!), its a beautiful and romantic city to have a wedding, make sure you do a private carriage ride....

Yes, I'm definitely talking about Charleston, SC! I agree that it is incredibly romantic. We are getting married at Middleton Plantation. Because we're having such a small wedding, we'll be able to transport our guests from the ceremony site to the reception site in carriages. I'll make sure that gavin and I get one to ourselves! Thanks for the advice!

Jenn--Your plans sound amazing! I'm sure all the guests from the UK will love visiting Charleston as it's such a unique place. Good luck with everything!

we were married in Manhattan Kansas, in the courthouse with only the kids and a couple of friends as witnessess. But we had a BIG blessing here in the UK a year later with all my family here and alot of Rob's flying over.

They loved visiting here and seeing how the brits celebrate marriage.
Everyone was happy with our choice ( plus my family is alot larger than his, we'd have taken over a full flight!!!!! lol)

We were married in Nuneaton registry office because that's where we live. It was a private ceremony; we wore clothes from Debenham's, then went out to eat at an Italian place. Whenever we get an invitation or listen to the plans for a big wedding, we just look at each other in relief. Neither one of us like that kind of thing, so it's good we found each other!

we got married at the Westminster registery office because a friend is a massive Mcartney fan and also it was rated the one of best venue in one of the bridal mags back in 2000.
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

My now husband and I were married in the states. Back in my hometown in the US. We had the ceremony in a registry office and an outdoor reception in my parents garden. My mom made the cake and my dad was the photographer. It's nice to have the connections for the big stuff. ;) I wore a simple dress from Nordstroms and the hubby got his outfit from JCPenny's.(Did I spell that right? I haven't shopped there in ages! lol) We strung fairy lights through out the house and the flowers were what we spent the most on.(Table settings and my bouqet was gerbera daisies. Wild flowers from a nearby field were placed in other areas.) And for some extra ambiance, we placed tea light candles in clear glass holders on the tables and around the house.(Bought at a dollar store) And then for our honeymoon, we spent it in Chicago, site seeing and getting my visa. When we arrived back in the UK, his family threw us a fun get together at a local pub. Kind of like a second reception. :) I wouldn't have asked for more!

We figured that no matter what we did we were going to be leaving someone's family out (not everyone could afford to travel) so we decided to just run off by ourselves. We got married in Jamaica and had parties in the US and UK afterwards.
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

We got married at the Edinburgh registry office with only two friends as witnesses.  We had a pint afterwards and supper at the Witchery.  We always planned to have parties with friends and relatives in the US and in England, but we never got around to doing it.  We were really happy with our wedding though as it was all about us and it is one of my happiest days.  We are now planning our daughter's christening and it'll be held in England since we are now living in the US.  All of our American friends and relatives were warned in advance- but I think it'll be a very small 'do.

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

My wife and I ran off and eloped to the Caribbean where we got married on the beach, barefoot.  It was actually a spur-of-the-moment decision. We were reading the Washington Post travel section and read about a fantastic package deal for flights and hotels that was cheap because it was "hurricane season." Three weeks later we were on the plane.  We had perfect weather the entire trip.  My now-wife got on the Internet and found a woman in St. John to marry us for cheap. She was also the photographer!

Neither of us ever had any desire to have a "traditional" wedding. But at the last minute her parents decided to come down and witness the wedding, which was fine and they only stayed 3 days.  When we came back a week later, we had a big party for friends and family in my parents back yard in Virginia.
