Continuous Health Insurance Coverage
« on: October 04, 2006, 05:25:23 PM »
I'm going to London for 6 months on BUNAC and have been on my parents health insurance until now, but I will be off their plan as of 12/31/06.  I need continuous coverage because I had cancer a few years ago and if I don't have continuous coverage, I won't be able to be insured for a long time.  I'm looking for policies online, but I know next to nothing about health insurance.  Does anyone have suggestions on insurers or any suggestions at all?

US or UK based insurance?

U.S. would probably be better, if I can use it in the UK.  but whatever, i just need continous coverage that hopefully doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  also if it could be used in many countries that would be awesome.  but i can get travel insurance on top of the health insurance to cover emergencies in other countries. i did find a program for new grads which can be used in any country, but it doesn't look like it counts as continous coverage for some reason.

I've never had to buy my own, but I know my company at home does sell individul plans. I have no idea if they would cover someone in the UK though.

Best of luck with it.

Here is a link to HIPAA that you may find useful-

Also, have you thought about going on COBRA through your parents policy for the 6 months?  It may be easier, but I suspect it won't be cheap.   That way you would not have to prove evidence of insurability. Your previous health history may make it tricky to get an individual policy.
Another advantage to COBRA would be that you could continue it for 18 months total.
Good luck
