How can I fund an education in the UK?
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:50:28 AM »
I need some serious help!   I am in my sophomore year of college here in california hoping to transfer and finish my BA in the UK.

1. Am I able to get stafford loans?

2. Is Pell still available?

3. Are there any special loans or grants for international students?

4. Private loans are pretty much not an option for me because i have horrible credit and no co-signer...   I do however have a perfect GPA (4.0) and am curious about scholarships and such..

Thanks everyone!!  any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

1. Yes, definitely- however, the UK university MUST have a FAFSA school code (most do, but there are a few notable exceptions!).  You can check to see if they have one on the FAFSA web site.

2. I'm fairly certain that you cannot use Pell grants (or any gov't grants actually, or Perkins loans) overseas...just Stafford and PLUS loans.

3. nope, not really.  Individual unis may have partial scholarships for international students- check the British Council's website or university websites for more info.

4.  If you can't get private loans and you don't already have a lot of cash (or a sponsor/parent willing to help you out), it's going to be difficult, especially for undergrads.  Undergraduate Stafford loans will probably not even cover tuition, let alone the living expenses money you need to prove that you have access to in order to clear immigration. (You're going to need to prove you have access to ~ $30,000/year- for tuition, accommodation, and other expenses- to get a student visa.)  Your parents can take out a PLUS loan, however, to fund the difference between the Stafford loans and the total cost of education.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12
