Changing your name after the wedding/move
« on: February 06, 2004, 04:52:34 PM »
I was thinking about this, I am planning on taking my husband's name after we're married.  If they stamp the spousal visa in my passport with my maiden name, can i change it once over in England? (I think I recall reading about this somewhere).  Just making sure i don't have to get the new passport here in America before relocating, because if that's the case, i'll use my maiden name for the time spent over there and change once i'm back over here!

Thanks!

You should be able to get the visa in your married name, simply by showing your marriage certificate.  That said, it's a simple process to get your passport amended (for free) once here in the UK through the Embassy.  You can get your SS card changed, too, from here.  The only thing you might want to change before leaving would be your Driver's Licence, as that needs to be done (at least in Florida) in person for a change of name.

Just pop down to the Social Security office with the needed birth certificate etc and they will give you a new one.  Takes a few weeks and they grumble at you, but they will give you one.

You would think this is the case, but that's not what happened with me.  They put the spousal visa in my old name because that's what was on my passport, despite that I had a marriage license there and everything.  This almost caused a problem as Frank put my plane ticket in my married name!

They may not put the visa in your new name Aim.  If they don't, then just be sure to put any plane tickets in your old name and then worry about changing when you get here.  As peedal says, very easy to change your passport and social security number at the US Embassy.
