A travelers best friend for SLEEEEEP

I have to say, this got me over the time change in Thailand, and from a girl who NEVER sleeps on planes it got me to sleep almost 6 horus on and off on the overnight flight to the UK from the USA.

It is from Boots' hollistic line, you take 4 and you're out for about 8 hours.  I took 3 for my flight and I have to say it ROCKS.  It relaxes you and you are OUT.

So if you can't sleep on planes like me, this is your saviour.  I'm going to stock up before I leave the UK for good.

This is good to know.  I've been doing research about jet lag.

One of the new theories  to get over jet lag, is you Decrease melatonin levels and increase seratonin levels.  You do this with light therapy.  If you're travelling east, light therapy in the morning and if you're travelling west, light therapy in the evening.  It is the light that allows your brain to adjust its clock,  not sleep as previously thought. 

I am really looking forward to trying this with our new SAD lamp next time we travel.

Well, and from what I understand, under the knee for some reason for the light therapy is the best... go figure!

I have done enough overseas travel though that I personally don't find the jet lag debilitating anymore.  Flying eastward is the easiest for me, and I can usually get a couple hours sleep on the plane and just have a long day and I am in sync after about 24 hours.

Flying west just sucks, but I can get back into sync in about 48 hours.

Also, the Boots' Aid is based on Valerian.  Here is some info on it: http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Valerian.asp  You should be able to find a food supplement that is similar in the US, though I don't have any experience with them.

If you're looking for a U.S. product, I've had similar luck using Calms Forte (http://www.calmsforte.com/) which is sold at Walgreens.

I usually just take 1/2 to 1 Benodryl right before the plane takes off. I have awful allergic reations to strong perfume (migranes if I have to smell it, rashes if it is on me)  I usually end up with a migrane and a rash (from the soap the airlines provide) by the end of the trip. I can't really sleep on planes either. It works. No rashes, no migrane, and lots of sleep.  [smiley=sleeping2.gif]

melatonion pills... lovely for jet-lag and sleepless nights.  unfortunatly, not able to purchase in Uk so one of the things i stock up on...

I just take tylenol and codine, makes me sleepy AND painfree! lol. Still amazes me they sell a narcotic over the counter here. They don't have as much condine as a prescription though.

My problem is still always having no place to put my head... the headrests that BA has don't really work for me because I'm too short. And my head always wants to slip downwards anyway, chin to chest. On one of the in flight catalogues I saw this big inflatable pillow that sits on your lap and then you lean forward on it to rest your whole upper body and head. THAT is what I need.

Same problem here.. while I'm not able to sleep much/ever on US/UK flights, the position I found works best for me is just to flip the tray down on the seat in front of you, place a pillow or two on top of it, and lean forward.  It's the most comfortable for me and allows the best chance for some sleep. 

Amazingly, on my way back from England a few days back.. the flight was almost completely empty (have NEVER had that happen in all the years I've gone back and forth) and so I had an entire row of three seats in the center to lay down on.. still didn't manage any sleep, but I got to stretch out nearly the entire flight.  :thumbsup:

I have recently done amazing well with those blow up U-Shaped pillows...  I can find that I can rest my head, though a bit more upright then I am used to without my head falling forward.  That is my preferred way and I find that I can get 2-3 hours of sleep that way.  My problem is that I suffer from sleep apnea so I stop breathing when I sleep anyways, so I never get any sort of deep sleep on a plane.

I always travel with my bucky pillow.  It seems to help but I still can't sleep for more than about a half hour at a time.

I am short enough to be able to just curl up sideways in my seat and use it as a bed.

not full stregnth but co-codanal... have some in my desk drawer actually- it's AMAZING for the massively horrible tooth aches i've been getting.  they sell codine w/ paracetamal & codeine with tylenol.   you have to ask the pharmacist for it.
