US to UK moving costs
« on: October 31, 2006, 09:26:22 PM »
Hello everyone

Could you please give the estimate, how much you spend on relocation (moving, overseas shiping) from US to UK?

Thank you.

Really depends on what you are moving...  Sort of like how long is a piece of string.

If you are moving a whole house and using a professional door to door mover, you are going to pay about $1.30 a pound including insurance.  My recent move of a 2300 sq ft house, but without moving beds was about $7000 with insurance.

If you are shipping some boxes and are packing yourself, you will be doing less of a volume and the price can go up to $2.50 to $2.75 a pound.  Of course you wouldn't try to ship 5000 pounds that way, but 10 boxes at 30 pounds a piece will run you then $750-$825.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

I guess I didn't make the question very clear. I would like to find out how much you (members of this forum) spent on relocation when you  moved  from US to UK.
I'm getting the job in UK and I would like to estimate the relocation costs. So, please let me know the amount and the type of relocion (for example 3 bdrm house)

Thank you

I condensed fifty years worth of 'stuff' down to three suitcases, and that's all I brought.  I made one bag the 'obese' one (and paid $30 extra for the 20 pounds extra weight), and also paid for an extra bag (that bit was $80 I think?) . . .

When I arrived, I went to a charity shop and replaced some things (dining room set, rocker, desk), bought a couple of things new (bed, sofa, kitchenware), and that was that.  Furniture is just furniture -- to me it's not that important -- but I did bring the 'special' things in my luggage -- everything from Christmas ornaments to the last 7 years tax returns, lace curtains I one bought in Switzerland to my good silverware set . . .  I really worked to pare down the clothes and shoes because they aren't expensive to replace (and that's fun anyway!), therefore using most of my luggage space for favourite things and necessities.  I also packed my really good down-comforter, my cashmere and mohair winter coat -- those two things alone made it worth the extra bag (they were worth about $600 together).

So, as I said, a bit over $100 for the extra baggage, then replacing furniture when I arrived (spent maybe £700?), and am content with that solution for myself.

I'm sure everyone has different does it differently -- that's what worked for me personally.

I leave for work at 7:10 each morning, and get home at 6:00 each evening.  Wish I could stay home all day and do nothing but sit around on UKY!  What a life!  And I have no Internet access in my classroom, so I can't just stop teaching and surf UKY.  Can you believe it??  Horrid, my job!

If you're looking at shipping a container of furniture, etc. it will depend on where in the US you're moving from - e.g. it'll be cheaper from New York than from San Francisco. I did the extra suitcase method and managed to get all of my essential stuff over that way but I've been thinking about shipping furniture and books over now that I'm relatively settled. I'm guessing it'll cost me a 2-3 thousand pounds (so $4-5k) and that's from San Francisco. I've only got about a one bedroom's worth of furniture plus a load of books and a few boxes of kitchen stuff.

I spent about $7,000 on everything...meaning from visa's, to shipping my stuff (I used Upakweship), to the extra spending money I brought over  I liked their service but I got socked with a container charge at the docks, but it was relatively easy to use their service and the customer service was excellent.

But in my case I was moving to a house already equipped (my in-laws) and didn't really ship much.  I shipped 4 large U-haul boxes and brought two suitcases and a big carry-on, I am also shipping my dog in January and well it was expensive but I worked 2 jobs and saved everything before I moved and I did it.

You can PM me if you want any advice, or tips.  I will tell you what worked for me.

I've spent about $500 total. Most of that in excess baggage fees. I brought clothing, some books, kitchen stuff I didn't want to part with, linens, computer equipment and other assorted oddities. The furniture I have here I purchased after I arrived.

Does anyone know where the thread is about moving house/furniture specifically?

I'd be shipping maybe a one bedroom-size house worth of furniture from the West Coast.
