Expediting US passport

Has anyone done this? I am looking at getting a new passport for a minor and have been reading up on it. I am trying to determine if I am better off to go through an expediting service or just pay the extra $60 to the passport agency and go that route? I will need to have the passport in about two weeks time once I apply. Any advice is appreciated.

I have used an Expediting service that costs quite a bit, though I did have a passport in hand in within 5 days of mailing required items.  With Griffin's passport we used the service that the US post office offers, we received his passport after 10 business days.

My parents did it about 6 months ago when they were scared they weren't going to get their passports in time.  It was very quick - don't know exactly how many days though.  I think they paid the extra fee to the passport agency.

my mum did the normal 2 week expediting service and had it back a little quicker than that- my dad used an expediting service when he had a business trip looming on short notice and got his back in a couple of days.

I used the expediating service that cost about $100 at the time as I needed my passport within 10 days.  Everything went great and I got mine back in 5 days.  I think it was the standard expediating service that the application talks about.  They even had a number to call and check up on the status of the passport as well.

I personally like the in person expedite, nothing beats the instant gratification of having a passport in hand the same day!  Of course in the States you have to live near on of the Passport Offices.  I happened to be working in New Jersey at the time.  They told me on Thursday afternoon at 4PM I needed to be in Hong Kong by Monday morning and I was sans passport!  Boy that was an adventure...

Thanks to you all for your input, I'm still trying to sort it all out. I wish I lived near a passport office, but sadly the nearest one would be Chicago and that is a 7 or 8 hour drive I think so not really an easy option.

I have been toying with the idea of trying to get an appointment to do this in Chicago. Turns out its a 5-6 hour drive which doesn't sound terrible if I can find a friend up for a road trip. Do you still pay all the extra fees to get it right away or how does that work? On the government sight it says there is no fee for an appointment, but I wonder do you still pay the expediting cost I imagine?

You still have to pay the normal fees plus a $60 expedite fee.  There are not added fees though for doing it in person or not.

Thanks to all who replied. I called the number on the government site and asked some question and turned out although the woman I spoke to was very nice, she knew less about the process than I did!

I am going to apply at a local passport acceptance location and just send the passport application expedited by overnight delivery and pray for the best!

Got the passport back in ten days, one of which was a government holiday, so all went well!
