San Francisco in December
« on: November 06, 2006, 12:32:51 PM »
My husband is going to be in SF in early December. His hotel is in Chinatown and he'd love some recommendations for restaurants - especially breakfast and dinner as he'll be at a conference most days. He's a big fan of Mexican and diner food but any recommendations are welcome.

Thanks!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Here ya go.  I've been to these 2 places so enjoy!!!

Both of these restaurants are in Union Square, it's a couple miles from Chinatown.  Just take Grant to Park.  There are a lot of other restaurants in Union Square that he may like, I just can't remember any at the present time.

http://www.colibrimexicanbistro.com/ You have to make reservations, but the food is yummy!

http://dailygrill.zgraph.net/location.cfm?subsections_id=25 Yet another place that you need reservations for but the food is amazing!

If he's really craving a burger and fries kind of dinner, there's always Mel's Drive In (a-la Beverly Hills 90210) on Van Ness Ave.  It may be a little too out of the way for the food though.  Also, there are some great restaurants around the Embarcadero Center.

Hope this helps!

If he's got the time to get around town for brekkie he has to go to Boogaloo for breakfast. It's in the Mission though so nowhere near Chinatown. It's on Valencia and about 26th Street or so (sorry - I can drive straight there but I'm crap with directions).

The best Thai place EVER is on Page and Filmore in the Lower Haight.

Avoid anywhere in the Marina - it's scary overpriced and yuppy.

He won't do better for Mexican than in the Mission though there are a few decent burrito places (Zona Rosa) in the Haight. There's a great Tapas place in the Haight called ChaChaCha and a mediteranian place down the street called Kan Zaman. Sorry, I lived in the Haight for ages so I'm a bit impartial.

On the outskirts of China Town (I THINK Kearny near Broadway) is a place that the name is totally escaping me. Come on, Jenn, where are you??!! But it's amazing though you have to sit at communal tables and there's often a wait to get in. Order specials not on the menu - the Singh Tao Chicken is outrageously good. Damnit I can just picture the place why can't I remember the bloody name???!!!

Thanks so much everyone. Keep them coming if you can! I'm so jealous he's going - last time I was there, I was 6!

I was thinking more about this. China Town is right on the border with North Beach which is the Italian area. Tons of good food there, but avoid the places on the main drag as they're not that good - tell him to have a wander down the side streets instead. And if he's in North Beach in the evening, tell him to go into a bar called Romolo and ask if Laurie is still bartending there - if she is, tell him I sent him in to say hi - she'd die from surprise!! I've lost touch with her but used to visit her there alllllll the time!!! It's sort of a yuppie bar but it's got a great jukebox and Laurie is awesome!
