I'm just pleading apathy and indifference :P

I think it's UNIX code for delete files till they are gone or something

somewhere  out there a star trek convention is missing a joke..give it back.

I can't believe I know this, but...

It's a joke based on the Unix command rf (which as Alicia said, means to "remove files") - it refers to a worst-case scenario in which everything on your machine is completely, irrevocably lost.  Sort of synonymous with the Windows "blue screen of death"....

(I've obviously spent too much time with geeky CS/CmpE boys.)

Almost.......   :)

It's the Unix command "rm" for remove.  The "-rf" part tells it to recurse subdirectories and delete everything without prompting, so you can do a fair amount of damage.  Do it from the root directory and you'll wipe out the entire system!

I just like the subtlety of the plate because computer geeks will get the point immediately while almost everyone else will be wondering what on earth it means.

No, but I've been told I might be missing a marble or two.......   ;)

D'oh!  I meant to type rm, not (-)rf.   *deletes brain without prompting*
