PS2
« on: February 07, 2004, 06:31:50 PM »
I have a PS2 in England and one in the US. I have tried the UK games on the US PS2 and they don’t work. My question is this . . . Is there any way to get those games to work AND can I use my UK memory card (which has UK saved games on it) on my US PS2 with the US games? I don’t want to loose my saved games and have to start over! I know – I am a geek!!!
Anyone, anyone???

I have the same problem except I dont have a US PS2.

Try getting a region x disc which will install the decryption codes for dvds and games from all countries. I have one in the UK and it works a gem. I dont know if my UK region x disc can work on a US PS2 because I havent had the chance to try it.

My other thought was taking the UK PS2 and swapping out the UK power supply for a US power supply. Now THATS geeky.

I'll look into it some more and see if I can find any answers for the both of us.

Now this is a topic for the husband! He is one of those classic games collectors...meaning we have every single video game console that exists!

Anyway, our PS2 is from the UK but he has hacked it to play all games (US, UK and ill-gotten ones). Failing that, RegionX should work but I'm not sure if that can be bought anymore.

I'll ask him about the memory card bit but my uneducated guess is that you'd need to use the UK disc in the US console in order to access your UK saved games on the memory card..thus the machine would need to be hacked or use a RegionX disc.

I, myself won't part with my Gamecube because it's cute and it's purple!  :P (I know Xbox is better but I don't care!)

Right. The husband says that you should be able to use your UK memory card to play your saved games on your US machine as it depends on how the code is written in the game not by which region it is.

And RegionX would solve your problems with playing UK games on US machine and vice versa.

Hope that helps!

(Btw, if RegionX isn't available anymore, we can probably copy it for you...assuming that would work!)  ;)

Oh cool lynne! Thanks so much for the info. I would LOVE to get a copy of the X thingy you speak of. Are you in the UK or USA?

*edit* Okay - I see that you are in York -  ::)

I'll check with Arthur to see if a copied version would work and let you know.  I don't see why it wouldn't but this isn't my field of knowledge!  :P As I said, I'm fairly certain that they stopped selling them so you may have trouble finding an original.

Hiya!

My husband is also a HUGE gaming fan. That was an understatement, too  ;) For his birthday a few years ago I had his UK PS2 chipped to play US games as well! The old PS2 just died after MUCH use and we bought a new Silver UK PS2 ("because it's quieter" hehe) and we're going to bring back an american one next time we visit and use it on an adaptor. I just wanted to add to the info about the RegionX cd- it's a great thing for turning your PS2 into a multi-region DVD player as well! You basically just go to the RegionX website and get the right codes to configure it! The only thing is, if you get one of the new PS2's, RegionX doesn't have the right codes yet.

Just a thought!

Ok not sure if this will work with PS2, but it works on most DVD players we've tried it on.  You can search for codes that "unlock" your system.  It's not a disc or software that turns your dvd player/ps2, but it's a series of hitting certain buttons.  Steven did this to two of his DVD players after a friend of mine told me about it.  you can look up your player model online, and then it gives you a list of buttons to hit in order and then abracadabra...you have a multiregion player.  plus you only have to "unlock" it once.

it's free and doesn't mess up your player (or i've never heard of it harming the device).  plus steven only had a cheap, "older" dvd player and it still worked.  got the tip of a fellow US student while in Germany when i was lamenting that i couldn't bring any dvds back to the US, cause they wouldn't work.  just a thought. ;D

Thanks for all of the tips! I will have to research the codes and try and test it sometime today. I have one UK game here that my son tried on his US PS2 - which obviously didn't work. I will look up the codes and give them to him to try.

FOUND IT FOUND IT FOUND IT ;D

Now let's hope it works....have your son try these hacks, missy

http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_dvd_region_hack.shtml

DVD Region Hack #1
Here are the instruction how to play Region 1 (USA) DVD's on the PlayStation 2 in combination with System-Disc v1.00 (this CD comes with all Japanese PS2 systems which are sold before April 2000):
Hack #1:

Press & Hold the Circle, Right and L1 keys.
Hack #2:

Press & Hold L3 & push the stick in hard
Hack #3:

Boot into PS2 browser without a CD in the tray
Insert the Region 1 DVD you want to play
Press Circle and R1 on the DVD
Hold Right until menu appears
Press Circle and R1 again

NOTE: This hack only works on the first revision of the PS2 (SCPH-10000). It does not work on the newer SCPH-15000

DVD Region Hack #2
It seems that Sony didn't do it's home work as it still is possible to playback Region 1 DVD's (US) on a PS2 even with the latest drivers installed, which should have prevented this in the first place!
Here are the instructions how to do it:

Load the DVD into the PlayStation 2
At the browser screen, select the CD icon then press and hold square and then circle until the DVD menu appears, holding both buttons all the time.
Then there are two ways to play the movie; you can either select the play icon or the movie start icon which is in the middle to the far left. If one doesn't work the other one will.

NOTE: This hack only works on the first revision of the PS2 (SCPH-10000). It does not work on the newer SCPH-15000

here's a really good site for hack codes for your dvd players...most of them are uk players. http://www.dvdhacks.co.uk/forum/index.asp?id1=1 if they don't have your player model, you can post a request for your hack code and you might get it from some techie specialist. ;D

Did your son ever get a chance to try out those codes, Missy?  I'm curious to know if they worked or not.  Fingers crossed that they did. ;D
