Does anyone know if counseling is covered by the NHS?  Can anyone recommend a good therapist?  TIA

It can be covered by the NHS if you are referred by your GP, otherwise, I think it is unlikely.

The NHS will refer you to a counciler, but they only give you 6 appointments, and then you better be cured. They will medicate you indefinately tho with anti-depressants :-\\\\

try this site http://www.bacp.co.uk/

or this charity http://www.counselling.ltd.uk/index133.html

http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/

or google " UK counselling" (2 Ls) and see what else pops up.

how about contacting the VA? Perhaps they have some counselling info on resettling.

Good luck JuneHawk. The hardest step is asking for help!  :)

I was just talking about this at work! People are afraid of a mental health diagnosis but will pop anti-depressants like candy if a doctor prescribes them.

Thanks guys.  I found one on the BACP website and since I can go during the day, I have an appointment for tomorrow.  I have never done this before so I have no idea what to expect.

Glad to hear you are able to see someone so quickly.

Depending on the type of therapist they will conduct their sessions differently. If you don't like this one and have the flexibility to look for others, go for it. Not everyone's approach or experience will suit everyone.

I'd suggest having a few topics you would like to cover written down before you go in. This will keep you focused and give you a place to start. Even if you don't refer to it, it may just provide a little security knowing what areas you would like to cover if you feel "stuck."

Some therapists will just listen and let you problem solve yourself or others will offer advice or probe you to think about things differently. It really depends on the situation.

Good thoughts for you tomorrow! Relax and be yourself.

Good luck.

In my experience (from family rather than personal) GP's in the UK are too quick to prescribe anti-depressants as a quick fix of symptons, rather than referring to a therapist to get at root causes, so bypassing your GP might not be a bad idea.

Fist session went good, no drugs though (dang!) LOL.  I'm going back next week.
