Will I be able to find these things at Boots, Sainsburys, etc?
« on: November 21, 2006, 12:37:44 AM »
I'm starting the packing process and would like to leave my toilettries back in Los Angeles. Could someone please tell me if the following items are available in the UK, and if so, if they're very much more expensive in the US?

I'll be living about halfway between Cardiff and Swansea, if that helps, so not too isolated...

*Neutrogena Triple Moisture hair conditioning products
*Aveda hair care products
*Venus3 razors
*any baking soda + peroxide toothpaste
*any roll-on deodorant with zinc instead of aluminum (like Tom's of Maine)
*Kiss My Face lotions
*any baby oil

That's the important stuff. Less importantly, I was curious if Revlon, Almay, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Cover Girl, Sally Hensen, Physician's Formula, etc. are available in stores, and how the prices compare.

Thanks in advance! :)
It's so green!

Venus razors, toothpaste, baby oils, Revlon, L'Oreal, Maybelline and Cover Girl are definitely available here.

As for prices and the others I couldn't really tell you.

yes, most of these are readily available. For prices, why not use their web sites to chunk in prices

www.boots.co.uk
www.sainsburys.co.uk

Pretty much everything can be found, except oddly some of the tampon brands (???). If you take things like motrin, then these you might want to buy in bulk, since UK law prohibits selling these things in containers of more than something like 20 (it's an anti-suicide measure).

You can buy Aveda here, I usually bring back big containers from SF because its more expensive to buy here.  Check out www.lookfantastic.com for their products.

Tom's of Maine I think Ive seen at Sainsburys.

or these retailers

I haven't heard of Kiss My Face but all the others are easily available here, although I haven't seen Cover Girl for a while, maybe it's not here any more.

Baking soda toothpaste is here.  Believe it was Colgate.  Seen at Tesco.

Got my baby oil gel in the baby section of Boots.  Readily available in the baby care section.

For the deodorant, you may want to try a health food store.  They have body products.

I think I've seen the Venus razors, but not sure.  Many of the same options as in the states, but not many choices found for women's shaving cream.

I'm pretty sure you can get Venus razors over here - at least, I think I heard that really annoying commercial on tv the other day!  :P  You can find Maybelline products at Boots - but I haven't had any luck finding the *specific* Maybelline concealer and mascara that I use, so I'm glad I stocked up before moving over.  Aveda products are also available - oddly enough, I think I remember seeing them among the cosmetics counters at Jenners (a department store that's now owned by House of Fraser) in Edinburgh - but they're crazy expensive, as are all toiletries (and pretty much everything in the UK, compared to US prices).  I think a bottle of Aveda hair serum that's usually $23 in the States was something like £25!

As a general rule, I've found that most toiletries and makeup tend to be about twice as expensive here as they are at places like Target, Walmart and CVS (with the unlikely exception of men's razor blades - Mach3 Turbo are £5 for four compared to $8.50 in the US, which is fairly comparable.)  If, like me, you're attached to specific brands, and you have the room in your suitcases/boxes, I'd strongly suggest bringing at least one of each item with you - that way you'll have a bit of time to either find UK substitutes or convince your friends and family to ship you lots of care packages!

For what it's worth, every time I go to the continent, I come back with these kinds of items: they're cheaper and the range is broader than here, partly because the stores aren't so limited to a few chains.

Ditto.  I always come back with hair care products, make-up/skin care, venus razor blades, dial antibacterial soap, and hand soap from Bath & Body Works!

Okay, that was really really helpful. Thanks, guys! :)

So I think I'll just have to go ahead and make room in my suitcases, then. One more thing I've thought of...

Stayfree ultra-thin pads? They're the only ones I use, since even the "cotton top" on the new Always feels like plastic to me. If they don't have Stayfree, is there something similar?

do you put them in ziplock bags when you take them back or just not open the new package?

We dont have the 'Stayfree' brand here, but there are several other brands to choose from including Always.

Anything liquid I take the top off, put a piece of saran wrap on it then screw the top back on.  No leaks yet on anything Ive brought back that way.  All the ziplock baggies I put into a big baggie (save space on removing packaging)  Everything else I leave in the original packaging.  My parents ship this to me as a gift.
