Billman,

I didnt really look into New Zealand, but that would be awesome to work and live there. Both sets of great-grandparents were born in Ireland, would that be enough to get a visa there, do you know? I am very open to change, and i would very much like to see more of the world.

Unfortunately to qualify for Irish citizenship based on family, they only go back as far as grandparents, not great grandparents.  Sorry :(

ooh, I second the New Zealand suggestion.  I would love to do BUNAC to NZ for a year, but it's not looking likely to happen for me, sadly.  And it's much, much cheaper than the UK! :P
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Man this sucks. I was in college last year. It doesnt make sense that it is harder for Americans to move over to england does it? Arent we their biggest ally?

You should try moving UK to US - now that is hard!!  Being Allies counts for nothing.

Too bad about the great-grandparents, but I also heard someone doing it through them as well.   You might want to do some research.

You wouldn't be getting a visa, you would be getting an Irish passport enabling you to work everywhere in the EU.

New Zealand is different...your close to Australia and close to Asia.  It would be great to be transferred over there for a while, I have thought about proposing it to my boss.

If you want to get a look at New Zealand, just watch any of the lord of the rings and you will see the beautiful scenery.    There are plenty of jobs and they are actively recruiting immigrants.... I am not sure what your background is or what you like to do, but I am sure you could find something there.

Also, for new zealand you don't have to go through BUnac.  You can go directly through the embassy which will save you a bunch of money.

You won't be able to get Irish Citizenship though great-grandparents, I'm afraid.  It definitely only goes as far back as grandparents.

As for 'oldest ally'...well, if you guys hadn't left the Commonwealth in 1783 you'd have the same rights as the Aussie's, Kiwi's, Saffa's etc...so don't blame us!

Me Too.  :)

Even Canadians trying to go to the US have problems - unless you have a degree.  So much for greatest allies and trading partners...

but then again, really, it's not like it is our right to live in someone else's country.....if we were connected or not!  It is a priveledge and sometimes i wish some folks (IRL not here) would appreaciate that more.

Some days i see people in stores and on the street and just roooooooll my eyes!

Lets face it...when it comes to immigrants, it's every man for himself.  Screw political and trade allies.  ;D

To the original poster.  We can all understand your frustration, it does seem like without a degree or family ties, that you are stuck.  Like other posters have said, if you are up for an adventure there are other places you can go, for longer.  Don't forget, you can come here for 6 months as a visitor.  If you can afford not to work, you might enjoy coming over and taking some alternative courses, i.e. not your traditional Uni courses.

Good luck

Yes, as immigrants we are guests in another country.  And it is the perogative of every good host to choose their guest list.  My life goes much better when i remember that fact.

The relationship and historical ties between the US and the UK cannot be accessed by individuals with immigration problems because the 'special relationship' is at the national level.

That means that any particular random person who comes along holding out America's hand for payment in order to ease their personal circumstances is not only doomed, but likely to be seen as laughably naive.

Now.

Having said that, I can put on my advocate's hat and point out that Americans are one of the largest ethnic groups in the UK.  Not the largest, because that goes to the Asians, not the second largest either, but among the largest.  At any given moment, there are an estimated 250,000 Americans inside the M25, be it naturalized citizens, WP holders, HSMP holders, students, spouses & dependents, and so on.  That's nothing to scoff at, and moreover provides badly needed leverage for my own advocacy work.
