travel insurance?
« on: November 29, 2006, 04:15:17 PM »
We're off to the US in December. I think I can get travel insurance as part of my private health insurance cover at work. I'm going to look into putting my husband and 8 month old son on that policy, too. But if not, does anyone have any recommendations for travel insurance?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We have Direct Line.  We actually had to use it two years ago on the way back for our trip to NY.  Rich got sick, we had to get off the plane (Yes, we were those people) 3am Rich needed to go to the ER.  ER costs were paid in full, no hassles.  Never got charged for switching dates for the plane either.  Only thing is you must call them first and you can not see a GP, you must go to the hospital.

but read the fine print about travel insurance very carefully.  know what you want it to cover... just health, or flight delays, etc?  also... there's usually a premium for US travel (what they usually call worldwide travel).  that's b/c US health care costs.

Thanks, I'll have a look at those!

Has anyone seen travel insurance that covers rental car insurance? We are going to need a car when we go back for Christmas, but last time the car insurance through the rental agency was 150.00 per day! I ended up getting liability only (even that was around 75 a day) but I was too scared to drive it so it sat in the driveway most of the time. Thanks!

check into your credit card.  my work credit card covers certain things for rental cars.

Good point, actually, credit cards can cover quite a bit when it comes to travel/insurance.

Bumping this back up.

Looking into booking a car for my trip home in April. My UK insurance does not cover me outside of the EU even though they are insuring me as a US driver. If I take the liability coverage most rental agencies charge, it's going to be a minimum of $200ish.

Has anyone ever figured out a clever way of getting around this? My credit card only pays CDW.  :(
