Quick Question...location of wedding
« on: February 10, 2004, 01:46:01 AM »
Hiya!

My fiance and I are seriously considering getting married in the Caribbean.  I'm planning on filing for a fiance visa, then going for the spousal visa after we're married.  I think I've understood it correctly that I could get married anywhere really as long as I have a certified marriage certificate, etc.  I know that the UK recognizes marriages performed in Jamaica as being legal, but just wondering if everything will be hunky dory if we choose to go this route.  If not, we'll go get married at the local registry and then have a renewal of vows in Jamaica.  Any info would be fantastic.

THANKS!!! ;D

Hi! If you get married in Jamaica you won't need a fiancée visa, that is for people who get married in the UK only. If you marry outside the UK, whether in the US or elsewhere, you can apply immediately for the spousal visa via the visa-issuing British Consulate that covers your home state. It really doesn't matter where you get married, so marry where you really want to! You might want to find out how long the Jamaican authorities take to issue the marriage cert though, as you cannot apply without it.

Your question has been answered so I just wanted to say I think that's a nice idea!

You should also make sure that the US recognises marriages in whatever location you decide.  And make sure you abide by all the requirements for said country in order to make the wedding legal in both the UK and the US.

Hmm....perhaps it would be easier to get the fiance visa and get legally married in the UK then head off to Jamaica for what would essentially be a vow renewal.  (Wonder if I can still get the free wedding ceremony at the resort if I'm technically married...hehehe).

Hmm...Hmm....Legal stuff is very scary and confusing to me, so I really don't want risk messing it all up.  But I really like the idea of Jamaica, so I might keep looking into it.  ;D

Jamaican marriages are recognised in the UK and I'm sure they are in the US too. There are very few countries where marriage is not recognised by other countries. Life would be quite difficult if you moved to another country and were told 'oh you're not married now!'

Too true Squirrel...though some people might find it a relief..... no divorce lawyers or anything needed ...just move!
That would be one way to erase a bad marriage!
