What the heck can I make with 2 swedes?? (turnips)
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:34:17 PM »
We received our organic veggie box yesterday & we now have 2 (one from a previous delivery).  I have no idea how to cook it, peel it (do I boil it first?) and we have no recipes for them at all!  We are willing to try almost any recipe, but we LOVE garlic & tomatoes - but I'm not sure how well those will go together. Anyone have any ideas?

I often mash them. You can add butter, salt & pepper, garlic, etc., just as you would mashed potatoes.

I agree with mashing them.  You can also add carrots and apple to the mash.  That is nice too.

I put swedes in my beef stew.  I just peel and cube it and in it goes.  It gives the stew a nice flavour.

It is nice in lots of soup too.

Just roast them as you'd roast potatoes. You peel the top part off, cut them into strips, dribble olive oil on them and roast them. Luuurvely.

Thanks for those tips!  BUT, how on earth do you chop them? I find them so hard - so you boil them first?

i just scrub 'em with the veggie scrubber and then i take my biggest knife and sharpen it well.  then i really use my weight to cut into it.  be careful!

I second the beef stew add in, always put some in mine and it does add great flavor!

Think of it as an overgrown funny-tasting potato - you just do the same with a swede as you do with a potato.

I tend to cut stuff like that in half first before commencing chopping - it's less likely to skid off the chopping board and your fingers should stay intact!

Swede can be used in pasties or pies if you make your own.

Cottage/shepherds pie, there's a tasty recipe in the site cookbook, and I have a swede in my fridge waiting to be made into that dish tonight. :)

Thanks for the tips - I will attempt to have them this weekend & I'll hopefully not get injured in the process.

Abba? I prefer my Swedes to be more tender - so I was thinking of The Cardigans! ;D

swedes are turnips and turnips are swedes???    :o  I didn't know that!!!  Course I don't think I'd ever even seen a swede/turnip until I got to the UK.
