Amsterdam
« on: February 10, 2004, 03:22:24 PM »
For my birthday, my husband is taking me to Amsterdam to see Cirque Du Soleil.

We'll be there for three days / two nights so we'll be able to do a bit of sightseeing as well.

Has anyone been there?  Any "can't miss" landmarks/attractions?  Things to skip? Any good hotel suggestions?  etc. etc.

Thanks!

Given I am usually in a 'cloud' when I hit Amsterdam (hehe), there are a few 'must sees'. Anne Frank's Haus and the Rembrandt Museum are must sees, along with a canal cruise so you can see the skinniest bridge and house in the town.

Of course, any visit wouldn't be complete without a walk through the red light district and at least a coffee (or more) at one coffee haus :)

Not sure what your budget is, but the Botel is good and cheap, and if you are being extravagant, try the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza or Hotel d' Le Europe :)

Enjoy.....I'll be there in May!

If you have a few days there, take a day trip on the train to Delft, it's about an hour from Amsterdam. It's georgeous, and has the Royal Delft Porclean factory that you can tour thru. It was a highlight for my trip there. Plus the train ride thru the countryside was very scenic, windmills, etc. :)  We spent a few days in Delft, and went into Amsterdam on our last day. One thing in Amsterdam I wanted to do, but we didn't allow for time, was the tour boat thru the canals. It looked so relaxing. :)  There is a kewl shopping area, I cant' remember the street name, but there is an alley way, which has a doorway that has tipped quite a bit to  the side.

Are you going see Dralion?

If you get the chance, see Boom Chicago. It is quite a laugh. It is at the Leidenplatz with many, many cafes in the area. You can just get tickets for the show or they do dinner as well. It is an interactive comedy show.

We haven't picked the exact date yet. Once I get back and we get back into a bit of a routine, we will go to the travel shop and see what’s available and choose a date! We have a ton to squeeze in between now and late May!!!
I will keep you posted! When will you be there?

I went to Amsterdam last September, and thought it was brilliant, apart from one thing.... our hotel.

Just a tip for anyone going... avoid the AMS Holland hotel in P.C. Hoofstraat.  It's an absolute pit, despite being in a smart street and looking very nice on the outside.

And for good food, try the rijstaffel in just about any Indonesian restaurant!  :)
