Milk?
« on: December 07, 2006, 12:39:21 AM »
Hi! I just arrived this past weekend, and the one thing I was taken back by was the milk. I normally drink 1 or 2%, and was surprised at how rich the semi-skimmed was. Is skimmed the closest thing? I'm no fan of non-fat milk, so I initially avoided it.

Also, I was offered something that I think was called evaporated milk, which tasted basically like buttermilk to me. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Is it buttermilk?

Thanks!
It's so green!

Evaporated milk here is evaporated milk in the US.  Comes in a tin/can.

You could have been offered UHT (Ultra-High-Temp pasturization).  Which comes in a little cardboard/foil lined box and doesn't need refigeration.  Not very tasty.

And I'm assuming you know it wasn't powdered milk.

You can get buttermilk here, but that would have been labelled buttermilk.

And, according my friend Wikipedia, semi-skimmed is between 1% and 2%, but I think it tastes richer too.

Cow's milk is generally available in several varieties. In some countries these are:

    * Full cream (or "whole" in US, "homo milk" in Canada & some US dairies, about 3.25% fat)
    * Semi-skimmed ("reduced fat" or "low fat", about 1.5-1.8% fat)
    * Skimmed (about 0.1% fat)

Milk in the U.S. and Canada is sold as:

    * Whole varieties
    * 2% (reduced fat)
    * 1% (low fat)
    * <0.5% (very low fat)
    * Skim (nearly no fat)

I'm not exactly sure why the 2% tastes better over here...same fat content...but it may be that it's less pasteurized.  All I know is I love the milk over here!

Hey Charity!

How are ya, friend.  Been on UK-Yankee today as I've been having adjustment issues.  Mostly to do with work and driving.  Ha!

Milk right:  I have noticed that too.  the milk here has a different taste to the US milk.  I think it's fresher here in the UK and actually comes from a cow.  LOL  kidding...

This is a general trend in most UK food, but I love that organic milk to so cheap and readily available!  I can't afford to drink it at home, but when it's only 16p more than regular milk, I'm willing to 'splurge' for my own health :).
