Fast Food Addict
« on: February 10, 2004, 10:54:12 PM »
Has anyone else noticed how addicted to fast food they were shortly after moving to the UK?

The past year or so has made me realize just how much crap I ate back home. With fast food not being as accessible (or just plain gross) here I don't eat as much but I find myself glorifying Jack in the Box and Taco Bell.

For a few months I lost my appetite completely and I think it was because I had a hard time eating actual food (stuff that's healthy, what a concept!  ;D ).

I'm better now, I married to a vegetarian and he's fanatic about eating healthy which has begun to rub off on me. I no longer to go Burger King and scarf down on burgers (more than I'd like to admit in one sitting) and I hardly touch soda anymore.

Has anyone else noticed a drastic change in their eating habits since moving here?

I've noticed a huge change but that's because I'm a terrible cook...therefore when back in the US I would be perfectly happy with packet/frozen/take out meals. But, the husband likes real meals (the ones with at least three different items at once!  :P ) and he's a fantastic cook!!  ;D

So, he does most of the cooking and it's usually healthy and mostly vegetarian (but not always). I usually make coffee-surprise on the weekend mornings.  :-/

Yes. Kicked the fast food diet for sure. I have been back (to the States) for 3+ weeks and making up for lost time  :o  Taco Bell 2+ times a week  :o

Me too, Ashley.  I often ate out two to three times, *per day* back home.  (Single girl, with a love of bean burritos, which are darned cheap!)

Now, we eat out less than once a month.  And I couldn't tell you the last time I had a Big Mac.

Real food has calories too though, I've noticed.  :)  I have replaced my love of beans and sour cream with pasta and cheese!   :o

are you trying to tell me that burritos and Big Macs aren't food groups? :o

Pretty much the same here.  No more last-minute runs to the Burger King or Mickey D's or Wendy's on the corner (yes, we had all three right next to each other about 5 minutes from my mother's house!).  Now I actually have to think out meals and if we DO have a night where I just simply cannot be bothered, we go to the chippie down the street or order out from a local pizza place.  But that's more like 3-4 times a month, rather than 3-4 times a week!  ;)

Hello I am a closet fast food junkie.

I am one of those who swear to hating the stuff.  Normally never eat it.  When I eat a Fast Food burger I have to run to the bathroom to wash my hands because I hate the smell of my fingers.  I am weird I know.

I actually belong to the slow food movement (have a card) that was formed to combat the Fast Food Nation (a good book to read BTW) and it's ideals. I love slow meals and in season foods and freshness. I prefer a quick pasta to a quick burger.

But every now and then.... in a frenzied moment of weakness I must have a Big Mac with fries (not super sized) and a Coke (diet don't you know ::) ). Or a Burger King Chicken sandwhich with mayo or well KFC extra crispy and mashed potatoes!

*sigh must go on elliptical now just to burn the calories I gained in mentioning it!

Now, VNP, if you were to eat your burger in the proper, grown-up, civilized Brit fashion with knife and fork, you woudn't need to go to all that hassle!!!!!  ;)

Thank you, dear VNP, but I fear you are too kind, and I am a total pratt.   :-[  What I should have remembered of course is that having used a knife and fork, you are going to have to have to wash them; and being a good American, rinse them too!  So it's not less of a hassle at all, unless you get Miles to do it!

Oh but Howard that debate was settled long before we got married.  I cook as I am a pretty good one (they tell me) and dear old husband does the dishes.  So no problem at all.  Though I daresay the people at McDonald's would think I was a tad off if they saw me eating a burger that way.

Hey....you know what?  One could always use plastic thus elminating any dish doing!  Yeah that's it.

BTW ...I love that word pratt though I do hate to tell you..you are far from being on.  :-*

If you're a McDonalds fan then you might be jealous of me...McD's home delivers here in Kuala Lumpur! We order something about 3 times a wk <shameful i know>  :-/  But I'm glad!

I've actually lost alot of weight since we moved here a yr. ago. We just don't go out as much as we did in the States and cook more at home.
Actually eatting out at the food stalls is cheaper than going to the grocery store and we have a huge variety at the stalls too....indian,chinese,japanese,malay,etc. It's great.
